I really dont understand why more are not doing it. At the $1000 and $2700 that iI hear it costs to replace a rear window, it wont be long till the insurance companys either start raising rates on us or they exclude this coverage Either way I prefer to not have my car laid up for days and having to drive 5 hours to a Lotus dealer to have it done. At 10 shields I am five away from break even on a order of 20...so I will take the chance. As soon as you all reply to me I will place the order. I will not ship however till I have your check.

Hello all..

Just an update. I dropped off the template for the polycarbonate. Will be done next week.

I needed the extra time to reseach the whole suction cup thing. UV resistant and the correct size hole....etc etc.

there are more to suction cups than meets the eye!!!

W have orders for about 15 units. I am ordering 20. So if anyone wants one that has not let me know...now is the time.

No...I dont have them made up yet. Once I get them made there will be a few left. I will post the pics then. It is really simple. Just a peice of Polycarbonate the same size as the rear window with holes for 5 suction cups and 7 cups provided.

Ah heck... I figured I'd try to make my own for less money, but for $49, it isn't worth the hassle. Add me to the list. Email is on the way...

C'mon folks! This is one of the best deals around! $49 to save you from a $2000 repair, as well as driving time lost!

Update. I am getting all the parts on Friday. I had to buy the suction cups from a wholesaler and they are due in on Friday. (At least that is what they tell me) Give me the weekend to put them all together and I will ship them out.

I will send out 10 suction cups per order so that there will be enough for replacement if that should be necessary.

Sorry about the delay. None of the suction cups available locally were the right size. All were too big or mixed and I had to buy too many that were not the right size.

The cups we are using are UV resistant and of good quality.

When I get the first one put together..I will post a pic.

Did you price some 3M film (the thick stuff) and install that instead? No need for suction cups.

I'm still working on a force field for the entire car, that would be so cool; you would always have perfect paint, a body, glass. Also, a replictor for the body panels and glass would be neat too. Or how about organic, living, self healing paint.

Or, if you had the kind of money Bill Gates has, you could buy a new Elise each month. The motor break-in would be an issue though. Even though I would have the money to not worry about breaking it in properly, I just couldn't do it; I love cars too much. I can't hurt them; I won't even do a drop clutch start, or use the starter (especially on a cold start) just to pull the car out of the garage; it must be pushed and very carefully with the fragile Elise.

Did this help at all?

Guys.

It happens. How do I know? Mine is out at the moment. And when I was putting in my insurance claim I did some research on this forum and a couple of others and there were a LOAD of similar occurences.

Whilst the replacement glass costs very little, the labour cost to remove the clam in readiness for the bonding of the glass is very high. I have been quoted for at least 8 hours' labour.

If you can remove your own rear clam it will be a cheap (though time consuming) fix, but beware as a simple mistake like overtightening a bolt (and cracking the fibreglass) or damaging the clam whilst it is off or is being manouvered will also be costly.

In short, if I were you I'd buy one of these screens for track use at least. Or put some tape over the glass when tracking your car.

Cheers
J
