Just picked up on this thread. This seat (Mog) is very close to the racing seat available from Caterham for their car. It is available both in fiberglas and in carbon. I purchased the seat off of ebay, with the harness, for $200 for my vintage elan. In the Caterham version it bolts to a 1 inch square cross section aluminum tube which has several mounting points for the seat and for the rails to the chassis. Lots of modification necessary for the Elan, but very Lotus. The rails mount 12 3/4" center to center.

The Caterham seat is nice and I think it is available for $630. Interestingly, Caterham uses a low loop carpet strategically placed in the seat to keep you from moving around. You can find a picture at www.uscaterham.com/. Click through to parts and then seats and seatbelts. It is part number 76082A

Wrong part number. The correct number is 73467.

Sorry!

Hi Jerry, thanks for the tip on the Caterham seat. Did you ever get a chance to compare both the Caterham and the Mog seat? How is the size / fit of the Caterham seat (what size are you if I may ask?) ? How would you rate comfort?

I have just compared from the photos. The Caterham seat is 15" at the hips, and hugs the body to mid torso. It would present the same problems as the Mog for entrance/egress, but it holds you laterally much better than the stock seat, and even the fiberglas seat is very light. They are made by a company that specializes in kart seats. Next time the seat is out of the car I will post the name of the manufacturer.

The Mog seat is also available in black fiberglass if you want it.

The Caterham seat is a Tillet, model B1 I believe. Tillet also have two other models, B2 & B3, but I don't know if Caterham sells them (I'm waiting to hear back from them).

I just scoped out how to mount the Caterham seat (Tillet B1). I think it can be done in fairly straight forward fashion using 1 inch square tubing in similar manner to the original Caterham rails. The big difference is that the side to side distance for the stock seat mounts is 16", and for the Caterham it is 12.5". New holes will be needed, and I recommend Sector 111's kit for strengthening the seat mounts (with new holes), but the narrower spacing gives room to floor mount the harness. I would finish the install and bring it to Aspen, but 1100 miles each way with no padding might be a bit much!

Note for those who may be interested in this seat. In fiberglas form it is just less than 10 lbs with the seat rails. If your butt is more than 15" wide, you will not fit.

Watch the width very carefully. The factory position for seating puts your butt almost on the floor of the car. If the rail position on the Caterham seat is only 12.5" wide, then the seat must be up above the rails instead of between the rails like the factory seats. This will put your seat significantly higher than the factory seats. I learned the hard way on this with the Mog seats. Their supposed factory replacement seat was anything but. Their brackets put the seat significantly higher (over an 1") than factory. I had to scrap their brackets and design my own for both driver and passenger.

With the seat higher it will alter the CG of the car and cause your head to hit the top or protrude over it with a helmet on. For you to have any hope of mounting the seat as close to the factory position as possible, the seat needs to be side mount with the right brackets to get the seat low enough.

Interestingly, the Caterham seat actually drops to a level almost as low as the bottom of the rails. Because it has no padding on the bottom, it is quite low. It would even be possible to construct new rails of 1X3/8 high strength aluminum alloy to get the seat even lower because of the height of the transverse structure in the Exige. I am trying to figure a way to quickly, yet safely, be able to change seats, as no padding may work on a track, but is not as present a prospect on the open road for several hours. We live in the NW and there are lots of places to drive that can involve several hours.

You would be surprised at how comfortable hardshell seats can be. The real issue is does it fit you well. If it fits your body shape well, they are very comfortable. I did a three day drive with the Caymen Club through SC, NC, and TN and was very comfortable the entire time.

As far as the height, if you can make it work great I say go for it. It would be nice to have another option to the Reverie/Mog. My drivers side seat is still a little higher than I would have liked it to be, but I had to keep the slider mechanism so my wife could drive it. If it had only been me, I would have made fixed brackets and had it hard mounted. It would have been so much simpler that way.

I want I will get I like these much better than the Revrie. I also like the fact that they will go LOW!
Just went to the FLUKE website and was surprised at the price.
Beautiful quality as well and customizeable.
How do they compare to the Revrie's as far as a weight comparison?
