Rear Window Inner Lexan Mod..

Just got done with this, but I havent gotten a chance to try it out at speed with the top down..... but it seems solid !.... also, crystal clear, no distortion.

Got a piece of 36 inch by 3 /32" ( .085 ) lexan..... made a template out of cardboard.... cut it with a fine blade on the bandsaw .....sanded down the edges.....got some suction cups at the hardware store....drilled SIX 1/4 inch holes for the suction cups.... stuck it on. Any rocks that come through will hit the lexan and not break the rear window.

Actually I have a company that I do business with. They do this stuff all the time. If I had the template, or I make one....I could get a price on a group buy. Anyone interested? They could cut it out no problem.

That would be great for people who don't have the facilities to make it. I'M NOT going to be "producing" them.... I don't even know if it'll work yet, but I'm presuming it will. even 3/32 lexan is tough. I'm planning on using a piece and putting it up to a piece of glass, and throwing some rocks at it to see if it breaks. I'm also planning on doing some 100 mph test runs with the top down to see how it holds up. The rear window is a very strange shape !!

Looks like it will work - are rocks or stones into the cockpit a problem?

Yes. Several have posted of their rear window's demise.

I've done the same myself. (Make a shield, that is.) But it was quick and dirty and I've been meaning to get around to making a better one. But, if someone made them, I'd probably just go that route.

Mine is supported by velcro at the ends, at the bottom-center (out of field-of-view), and at the top behind both seats (also out of the field-of-view)

Rear windows have also broken when taking a corner hard, and the chassis bending causing the glass to shatter into a million peices. One of the local guy's broke this way on a drive last week. So you're not 100% safe just yet! Good stuff though

Probably true.....but with the few broken ones I've seen on here due to rocks coming in..........for 12.00 it's cheap insurance.

You beat me to it. Looks good. I was going to use tape magnets or velcro to attach mine, but maybe the suction cups will add a bit of cushion also?

( just my opinion )....the suction cups are also clear...you don't even notice them when you look out......it also keeps just a small space between the lexan and the glass, so if a rock should hit it, it's got a little bit of a cushioning effect.

Next week I will take a template of mine and take it to the company and see what it costs to have 20 or so made.

Let you all know

If it is not in the post...what size (thickness) is the lexan you used?

100 MPH test complete. Verdict: no flutter; solid. not even a vibration.

nice! you should have all the exige s owners take off and donate their rear view windows (it's not like you can see anything but the IC and engine bay out of them) to the elise owners... heh.
