Ten-Minute Gas Bib

Inspired by JLElise's post on a gas bib, and not happy with pianomaniac's solution of using paper towels, I searched around ET and found one other thread that was only okay. $20 + shipping? That's too much. So I decided to go to the hardware store and make my own for $6.99.

Materials needed:
  • black cabinet liner
  • scissors
  • your fingernail

Step 1: Go to the hardware store and buy a roll of black cabinet liner.

Step 2: Roll-out the liner and cut to the desired width. I like to have the curl go into the car to match the contours around the gas cap.

Step 3: Try to feel where the gas cap is and draw a circle with your fingernail. Then cut out a hole, making rectangular spaces on the left and right for the handle and hinge.

Step 4: Accessories and add a little pizazz with matching rubber gloves for fueling.

Step 5: Roll-up the gas bib and stick it behind the passenger seat in the corner.

Step 6: Fuel.

are you folks use F1 fueling rigs or something? you know, the ones that deliver pressurized fuel at 400 liters per second...

why is there such a problem with putting fuel into this car?

No idea. I'm just trying it out. Worse comes to worse, I'll line my kitchen cabinets.

However, I am smitten with my matching gloves.

oh, and if you need those wrist thingies while doing an arts n crafts project, i can totally understand why you're getting sick while actually driving the car.

Looks very "pit-stop" cool. But seems like a lot of trouble to solve a non-existant problem. Twelve thousand miles on my car and I havn't dripped any gas on the paint yet.

I just learned (from my motorcycle days) to tip the nozzle "upside down" (so the curve point up) then tip into the filler pipe. When done, pull it most of the way out, pause for a moment to let the last drops fall off, then rotate the nozzle so that it again points up as I remove it from he filler pipe and away from the car. I don't spill a drop.

You learn to do this on a bike as spilled gas tends to soak into your pants and "burn" sensitive parts of you body - you only tend to to that mistake once.

Yeah, maybe this bib is kind of stupid, since I've never really spilled fuel before unless I accidentally top-off. After I'm done fueling, I usually lift the hose up while the nozzle is still attached, then slowly remove the nozzle. This serves one of two purposes:
  1. To to drip the fuel into the tank.
  2. To get every last drop of fuel in the hose. Hey, you paid for it.

Well, even if the gas bib was unnecessary, I found a use for the black cabinet liner:

I got this:

It works. Might be unnecessary, but it's cheap insurance.

On cars w/fuel doors, I use a pc of inner tube. It's always attached and gravity-powered.

Man your aim during refueling must absolutely suck.

You get a gold star and an "E" for effort however...

BTW, I have actually dripped gas on the paint, so to avoid this, I just hold the gas cap under the nozzle until it's clear of the fender.

How about just leaving the nozzle in the tank, and drive off. No muss-no fuss. Remove it when you get home. (Just don't forget the gas cap at the gas station. They might not be amused when you come back for it.)

If you installed a gas tank similar to this one, you might only ever have to fill up once or twice in your life.
