Exige S sold to CARMAX

A friend of mine at Carmax said they had a 20k miles 07 exige S just come through. They can't sell it so they are sending it through the dealer auction.

What would have to be wrong with an Exige for someone to take it to Carmax?

Houston BTW, should be auctioned off today if anyone is interested.

I suspect Carmax offered them more than the dealer.

I don't understand, "it just came through" CarMax and they can't sell it". Does this mean that they've had it for some time and it hasn't sold, or they don't want to sell it? If they don't want to sell it, why did they buy it?

My guess? Someone dumped their 'S because they didn't care how much they got raped on the resale and wanted out of their car ASAP.

I would only hope whomever sold this to Carmax has it "like that" To some (e.g. many here) an Exige S is a fantastic, rare, and amazing car. To other's it's one of their many toys and perhaps this one may have been too quirky for the previous owner's tastes----so off to Carmax with a Coke and a smile.

This is true of most dealers; and the Exige is such a niche vehicle it probably would have sat for months. It's all about the cash flow.

...or maybe someone raped the car and then just wanted someplace to dump it.

Carmax is not as stupid as we all think they are. At one point I thought they were just a buch of salespeople with no knowledge of cars. (or small amount of knowledge)

Long story short, a far relative took his car to them. A very decent looking young woman came out and the guy thought he was going to get really lucky and sell the car there and then since what he paid for it was way less then what they sell them for. What he did not tell them is that it was in an accident before.

The lady made 3 circles around the car, bend down once and typed him a paper:

2005 Honda Accord.
55% or the car repainted.
Quarter panel replaced
Frame work(also replaced with the same quarter panel)
Clean title.

$8300 is what she offered him.

The guy left the parking lot in shock

So just "dumping" the car off is not that easy

If I were looking for an Exige S, Carmax is certainly not the place I'd go. I understand their auctioning it.

I can understand Carmax not wanting to sit on an Exige, but I can also understand somebody having them buy it.

I've sold a couple of cars to Carmax over the past half-dozen years. Both times they paid a lot more (basically blue-book price) than the dealers were willing to give on a trade-in. Ultimately it was far easier than putting ads in the paper or E-Bay. Although I probably would have received a few more $$$ from a private sale, all-in-all the experience at Carmax was far worth it, in terms of time invested and hassle.

i've sold a car to Carmax in the past and they REALLY do know what they are doing when it comes to buying a car from you. i can also see myself going to Carmax when the little lady and i are looking for our next set of wheels.

that being said, i think the issue with the Exige 'S' and Carmax not wanting to sell it is that i believe (or so i've been told) they will not put cars over a certain value on their lots. it takes to long for turn over. they recently changed their purchasing valuation system. it used to be base mostly on Blue book. now, they lean quite heavily on wholesale auction prices for the cars. this way, when they buy something like an Exige 'S' that they don't want to deal with selling, they just put it up for auction and get their money back plus a little profit.

Two reasons...

Most people dont know they usually offer more...and some people just dont care, they would rather trade it in and get the new vehicle at the same place.

I sold a 2006 Mustange GT with 18,500 miles to Carmax last year. It had been in a fender bender and had a small dent in the rear driver side panel, and the plastic wheel liner was broken in half. It also had mice come in and chew up the shift knob and boot. I think the car also had a big door ding on the passenger side. This was my wifes car and I think it was cursed.

They offered me $20,500 and I sold them my car on the spot...

Best a dealer could offer was $18,000.
