I don't know if you can get the car registered. I've heard that it's possible to get cars registered as kit cars but I am selling this as a track car.

Not sure since the top makes the car more attractive as a track car I'd probably like to keep the top with the car. Send me a PM to discuss.

I'm going to call the state of Tennessee and see about the details on registering it as a home built "kit car" and see what they say. BUT, there is another problem...trying to get it insured. I don't believe anyone will insure it without a VIN...I hope I'm wrong though.

The car has a VIN its just a 2004 VIN. If you register it as a home built the state assigns a VIN.

This is EXACTLY what I am looking for except for the year. I need it to be a Federal Elise so I can register it and drive it on the street. Likely it will be a full time track car, but I like to test my mods before I get to the track at lower speeds (on the street).

I'll keep looking, but good luck, great price!

well if you tell them what your REALLY doing their going to say no because it's not a home built. You should just be able to fill out the proper paperwork for registration and we know the car will pass inspection since it's an S2 and that's it right?

What is the VIN on the car? I can run it through the state and see what they say? If there's a way to get this car registered I will buy it asap, especially since I live in the same town....man I hope this works out.

I do understand Lotus sells track only vehicles, but typically manufacturers do not sell pre-production cars. Very interesting. Do you know someone at Lotus? 99.9% of the time, preproduction cars are sent to the crusher.

Cool piece of Elise history...
That is probably true of normal pre-production cars - but the Elise was in full production in 2004 (just not exported to the US) so this is essentially a normal 2004 production car (aside from the airbags and dash which are from 2005 that layout was not standard in 2004).

I'm always disappointed by peoples lack of creativity. If you are determined enough to get it titled, you can get it titled.

The vin is just a sticker. Think about it. Where there is a will there is a way.

You can do how my friends registered their VW dune buggies. Buy a vin number and title off a car that has been totaled and slap it on this one. We knew a guy with a stack of em. He'd sell us a vin and title for $50.

Not sure you can do this... Maybe if it was a Lotus 7

My concern is that the status of this vehicle is not significantly different than some of the Nissan Skylines here in the US. Just because you physically get a car here, and even get a title and road license for it does NOT assure you that someday you would not get nabbed and forced to export or destroy the car. There are a ton of "burned" Skyline owners out there that have been forced to export their cars.

My suggestion would be to spend a bit of money and get proper advice from one of the reputable firms that handles 'modern' cars not built for the US.

I could easily be off base...but wouldn't the alternative suck?

Steve

Getting away with multiple counts of felony vin tampering is fun and all, but at 5 years a pop, you could end up in the pen for quite a while.

Crimes and Criminal Procedure - 18 USC Section 511 - US Code

VIN Tampering ~ ChevelleStuff.com

VW guys think they are immune for some reason, but no-one is, people get busted on this all the time...

take care,

Don't forget the drivetrain. The rest of the world didn't get the Toyota drivetrain until after the Federal Elise was released.

Yes they did - the 111R came out in 2004

edit - just checking and can't confirm... perhaps they were released at the same time

Just wanted to confirm that this car does have 2 oil coolers. I've had the question asked a couple times.

The rest of the world did get the 111R before the Fed Elise was available here...by a few months. All first year Fed Elises have VINs indicating 2005 model year even though they were built from mid-2004 on. The rest of the world 111Rs were 2004s until the end of 2004.
