FS: adaptor rings for 5-1/4" front speaker install

CNC machined black acrylic. Proper thickness for flush install of 5-1/4" speakers.

Fours speaker mounting holes drilled and tapped for included hardware.

Standard 5-1/4" bolt pattern. Fits JL Audio for sure. See ring dimensions below.

Remove original speaker. Remove metal ring imbedded in the dash, yank with needle nose pliers. Enlarge hole (just foam material) to fit new speaker. Test fit speaker for depth clearance.

Bolt your speaker to the ring. Drop ring and speaker into dash with silicon or goop adhesive. Pay attention to bolt orientation, you want clearance to removes bolts when needed.

$30.00 per pair. Shipped. Paypal is jimclayton@mac.com

I just did this mod. You wouldn't believe how much better the car sounds. Unreal.

I had the stock rear blaupunkts in the front and it still makes a huge difference.

The rings make for a real clean install once you remove a little material in there. Didn't take long at all - just used a razor blade, pair of pliers, and a recipro blade (didn't use the saw, just the blade). Once you get the metal ring out of there, the rest comes out easily.

BTW, I put some fiberfill under there and it made a noticeable difference.

My Elise is really rocking now. Thanks for the rings - a value at twice the price!

You don't mess around. Quick install! I'm glad they worked out for you.

Yes I have more. Bill (thanks Bill) has nice write-up for install, link below. Scroll down to 5-1/4"
install, go past the 4" install.

Jim, I'm also interested in purchasing a set.

I currently have the 4" JL Audio TR's up front & am thinking about upgrading to the 5 1/4" JL VR's.

Which JL Audio's did you install & what size speakers do you have behind the seats?

I ran 5-1/4 front and rear. VR's are fine for this. I ran a 5 channel amp with the JL sub up front. The rear speakers were turned way down to obtain the best sound.

I installed 5-1/4" JL Audios in the front today using Jim's rings. They worked perfectly. The rings are a high quality product. Highly recommended.

Tried to install some 5.25" Focal 130CA coaxials today, but the grill assembly is just slightly too large a diameter. I could put the speakers without grille, but the holes in Jim's rings are just 1mm or so too close to the center of this speaker. They don't line up quite right. I'll have to try some of the JL's. Has anyone tried this with the JL XR525's? I've had XR 3-way components in a previous car and liked the sound, but just wanted to try the Focal's as they were on clearance @ Zalytron.com ... but no dice ...

Maybe we should make a speaker "list" that would work with these rings that Jim has made up for us ... Jim has the VR's installed (onboard crossover/cap). The XR has an offboard (more advanced) crossover, but that complexity may not be called for in this car ...

The XR525-CXi is discontinued, but I found similar dimensions on JL's site for this speaker as for the VR525-CXi. The XR is available online still, found with a google search generally <$200. Not a bad deal. I'll probably order these and stuff the outboard crossovers into the dash. The crossovers supply first order lowpass to the midwoofers and second order highpass to the tweeters. The builtin cap on the VR would only first order highpass the tweeter and the midwoofer would get full frequency. Again, though, this could be totally moot in a car this noisy, especially mine with the aftermarket Arqray exhaust.

Pretty sure that is what I'm running. I will check tomorrow and post on here. Whatever I have it sounds awesome!

FYI - I heard a noticeable difference when I stuffed some fiberfill from an old pillow in there.

I just installed the VR525-CXi 5-1/4" from JL. They fit the adapter rings and the dash without a problem.

How do they sound? Did you go with the 5.25" VR's all around? I'm about to do the same & swap out the JL TR's.

5.25" VR's all around.

Definitely there is a sound improvement; I consider that it was worth the cost/effort. I didn't swap the head unit though, and I can now tell that it is severely lacking. So, that is next on the list. An ampliflier would be a better solution, but I don't want to go through that hassle, especially given that I often like to listen to the car. The car could also use a sub.

I think I am also going to add some fill material to the front speakers. The back ones sound better than the front ones, I think because of the fill material in the rear and vacuous space for the fronts.
