Oil Catch Cans - to your Elise in 30 minutes or less

Well, call it an hour with a beer break. Saikou Michi Company made me a custom dual catch can setup. They can make you the same in just a few days...email them and ask for Dave's Lotus setup. He responds to emails fast, and is a nice guy. Want better news?

-The dual setup kit (DC3) is only $120 configured any way you like.
-It's a high quality piece, with internal stainless mesh, and an easy drain petcock.
-With it's conservative size, you don't need to do any major modifications or move/remove the washer reservoir.
-You can can reuse the OE vent hoses and don't need to add splices anywhere.

I mounted the can kit on the boot bulkhead with a single screw through the top lip. Between that and the four hoses, it's not going anywhere. It comes with a couple mounting brackets which could easily be adapted for a different mount.

Then in a nutshell, remove the hoses from the engine...you can leave attached to TB. Get rid of the foam sleeves while you're at it. Trim about 2 inches from the PCV end, then attach to the can output. The larger hose will attach directly and doesn't need cut.

I didn't buy the hose kit they sell because I'm not much for that clear hose...looks nasty after the blow gets to it. So I picked up some 1/2" and 9/32" black rubber hose from Autozone...a foot each is more than enough. Some stainless clamps and away you go.

That does look good, Dave. That brand was my first choice for a catch can. Now that you've figured out exactly how it mounts I'm sold. I'll call him tomorrow and order one.

my formula ford has a plastic bottle that is about the same dimension as an oil bottle. its a PITA to remove and reattach every session. it takes ~ 8 minutes, and its messy.
thanks for the post dave. i think i will see if he can make me one to my dimensions required, and have the petcock on the bottom so i can just open it into an oil can, and measure the output.
I need to replace the amount of output for each session.
Thanks again dave, i needed to do something, as my bottle is old and brittle, waiting to crack.
an accident in the works.

I had ordered this with the intent of using the included bracket, which would stand it off the bulkhead a bit. Mounting directly, as I did, left the intake angle a little off on the close can. So if you do plan to mount this way, have him offset the first can intake angle a bit, maybe 30 degrees or so...see pic below. He will weld your fittings and size them any way you like. PS: Leave a little slack in the engine to can hoses to allow for some engine movement under load.

lol... that's funny I know Saikou-kun. I didn't know he was working on a Lotus catch can. He didn't contact me for any test fitting...

Looks good

Sorry for the ignorance, but what is the purpose of an oil catch can?

Short answer? All engines experience some degree of blowby which results in some nasty gases in the crankcase, forced induction causes an increase in these gases. In a typical setting, these are run through a PCV system (one-way to prevent higher intake pressures from going back into the crankcase) into the intake stream. Some oil is invariably carried through the system and gets on/in everything as it's typically routed back to the intake source just downstream of air filtration. In a car running an intercooler, the intercooler commonly collects this oil.

The idea of this device is to condense the oil out of the blowby gases before allowing those gases to be recirculated into the intake. In Dave's set-up, it's preventing that oil from being dumped into the supercharger.

Ever see a dirty PCV valve that's sludged up? That's basically what's getting dumped back into the intake - the stuff that becomes that gooey sludge. Ever note that oily film in an airbox when you change an air filter?

There are other ways to address the issue but a closed system like this is fairly safe and clean (environmentally speaking).

Here's my short answer:

It reduces the nasty stuff that normally flows from your engine into your intake.

The can closest to the motor has a 3/8" input and 5/8" output. The other can has 5/8" on both.

It's very lightweight...guessing no more than a pound for both cans.
