I want to thank you for making these bulbs available to us. I love the new clean look.

I do want to comment that because I knew the risk of breaking the turn signal I took my car in for service to the local dealership for the job. They also let me know there is a risk in doing so. I figured that the pros would have a better chance of doing it right, than I, an amateur. Anyway, it was supposed to cost me less then $30 to have it replaced and it ended up costing me almost $300 because they broke one of the signals and lost the rubber ring that goes around it. It really frustrated me and I wrote a long email about it to the advisor asking him to pass it on to Lotus. I never heard anything from Lotus, so I assume they never got my email of concern.

I'm very upset that these lights break so easily. I have had my signals replaced somewhere between 5-10 times in the 4 years of ownership of the car now. They were always covered under warranty, but now that I have the extended warranty there is a $100 deductible and I don't even know if they are covered. My concern is that the previous time one popped out while I was driving it scratched my starshield and I had to have it replaced. I've heard of people that have actually had the clamshell damaged from this. I truly hope that doesn't happen to me.

Not trying to alarm anyone, but be careful when you are replacing these bulbs because it's not cheap to replace the turn signal.

AgentTripleX,
Sorry to hear you had trouble with these. Frankly, there's no excuse for the dealership to have screwed it up. I've taken mine out 4 or 5 times myself with no issues. It's a little tricky, but there's no way they should have broken anything.

For those attempting this, the instructions in this thread are spot on. The tab takes a little bit of force to pop free, not a lot. If you peak in with a flashlight and see the tab, you can be sure your screwdriver is on the right surface. Likewise, when replacing it, all it needs is a little force. You should be able to snap it in with just your thumb. Don't use the heel of your hand, it can exert too much pressure. You'll hear a definite 'click' when it seats. If you don't, you run the risk of a flailing light.

I will say, however, that the plastic ring around the light is brittle. One of mine had broken / cracked previously (unrelated to me removing it). Got a replacement from lotusgarage for around $25. It's significantly more supple than the one that was there.

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles... I would think the dealership should pay for anything they broke while removing. You'd have to really pound on the light in order to break the tab... I've done this probably 5-6 times and it's not a difficult task *if* you take your time to find the right spot to push on.

I can't find the email now, but I have it printed somewhere for reference. I was told by the service advisor that the odds are in favor of a lay person replacing the bulbs because they only have to do it once. Someone that does it 50 times has higher odds against him because he replaces it more. I would think it's the other way. Someone that has done it 50+ times would have more experience and a technique down. I'll look for the email as I think it's classic. I still can't believe how expensive those damn things are. If it happens again I may just make copies of all the times I've had them replaced and send to Lotus. It's a small thing, but it adds up. If it's going to cost me minimum $300 each time to replace. Total BS.

HAH that's comical!

By that logic I better hurry up and enter the Olympics because as an amateur I'd stand a better chance at winning a gold medal versus being a professional athlete!

Just a side note. If Bane runs out these bulbs they can be got from BMW part No. 63-21-7-160-897 Bulb Silv D3 altought you can expect to pay a bit more than what Bane is charging. But at least they are "proper German bulbs" not cheap chinese ones.

Ordered. Will have to photoshop my avatar so they are white

That sucks about the dealership thing. I'd make them pay for that one.

I've never had a problem with them. I'm weary that if you pop them out once, they are weaker and break or pop out on thier own easier. I guess time will tell

I won't run out either... I have a pretty solid supply of them (for now).

edit: nevermind, got it. Must have been missing the tab. I reinstalled the "easy one" to practice on it again, then tried the "hard one" and got it fine.
