I'm in.
The Porsche guy is also in. We'll be at the usual location between 8:15 and 8:30 so I can still chug my morning coffee before we depart.

I'll be there too with a friend co-piloting my Elise.
The Porsche guy just backed out - he told me he peeked at his front tires and they were so old that wire was showing, so he does not feel comfortable going up against a bunch of Elises like that. I think he just chickened out. See you tomorrow am!!

You might want to stay out of the fire areas. Even if the debris is cleared, there is a lot of ash and dirt flying around in the smallest winds. It is easy to get it in your eyes. (I know this from recent experience. My commute to work is from Ramona to Rancho Bernardo on Highland Valley Road, and that area got burned pretty bad.) Plus, there are a lot of work crews in the burned areas fixing power lines, clearing burned trees and brush, and clearing burned houses.

Anyone going for a drive this Sunday, 11/11? Are the roads safe and clear of debris now? I'm here and ready to go if anyone else interested and advise of the current road condition. I've only done once before several months ago. Let's go people.

78 between Ramona and Santa Ysabel is temporarily posted with a 35 MPH speed limit due to linecrews working that stretch. 79 between Henshaw and Valley Center is still a mess, they're still mopping up the Poomacha fire there. All roads east of Santa Ysabel are wide open with no ash. I haven't been down Old Julian Highway or through Mesa Grande since the burn and as Chris said HVR is a mess.
South county has got to be a disaster due to the Harris fire. Lyons Valley and 94 were hit pretty hard. I'll be effectively out of town until Thanksgiving but I'm up for a spin the weekend of the 24th-25th. We are all OK on our end of Ramona. Chris got hotter than we did. We do know many people who were burned out though. I think Chris and I live in the only section of unburned old-growth scrub left in the county. MS Last edited by Hayseed : 11-08-2007 at 04:38 PM. |

Maybe a shorter drive then? I would like to stretch out the legs on this car.

Randy,
I think the east county roads will be getting back to normal (normal, except for the fact that everything on both sides of the road is black and it all smells like a burned tire) by the time I can get free, Nov 24-25. If you can wait that long, I'm up for anything. MS |

I went on a MC ride out there through lyons valley to Cuyamaca to Banner grade and back. I didn't see a single cop but lots of border patrol on Lyons Valley. The roads were surprisingly clean and while I will be out of town this weekend I am going to go on a short run on monday morining with a friend of mine in a carrera if any of you would like to join.

There are still plenty of roads in unburned areas like highway 79, engineer's road, 78 east of Julian, etc. The best map showing fire perimeter and roads is at the following link:

I couldn't wait for the Sunday drive, so I did a test run today:
I took I-8 East to Sunrise Highway North (40 miles east of SD) - enjoyed some nice twisties on the way up the mountain, very relaxing and hardly any traffic at all. Cruised 24 miles on Sunrise Hwy, passing Mt. Laguna (5000-6000 ft elev.) - spectacular view, until it ends at 79 Highway. I, then, turned north on 79 Hwy for a quick 6 miles of twisties to Julian. There was considerably a lot more traffic heading into Julian, where it was full of people, and cars - saw a nice brand new silver Ferrari F430 convertible. I couldn't find a parking space so I made a quick turnaround and got back on 79 South, hit the twists and turns again on the way back with no traffic in front - stopped at a cafe on Lake Cuyamaca for a really good chili burger! Then continued southbound on 79 for another 17 miles until it crosses I-8 - a lot of sharp curves and turns on the way down with very little traffic. Hit I-8 westbound home. It was a beautiful sunny and very cool (50's-60's) day for a nice relaxing drive. I had a lot of fun - it would be a nice group drive! The roads were very clean. There were a lot of bicyclists and I only saw one CHP on the way down on 79, at Lake Cuyamaca. Gorgeous mountain and valley views along the way coupled with nice, cold, fresh air! Took some photos along the way - had to adjust the colors as it was sunny ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Almost forgot my favorite photo! ![]() Last edited by good2go : 11-10-2007 at 07:27 PM. |
