I'm slowly building into SSM. At this point I'm classed locally, but I can't do any bigger events because I'm underweight.
Others in SSM, where did you add weight? What material did you use? I believe I'll need to add at least an extra 100-150.
I was thinking of building some kind of cross brace for under the passenger seat and putting some steel plates on it as a start. Where else do you add?
Why not just bolt the plates right to the floor pan there? Big washers and done! I know fred told me he has his under his passenger seat, but not sure how much or how attached.
I was worried about putting so much weight on the floor pan. Just bolting it down would definitely make life easier; I was trying to limit the number of new speed holes I needed to create.
What material did you end up using? Any resources for finding them?
Do you have a stereo in the car yet? I am adding weight under the custom made sub box I am putting in the Passenger foot well. This also distributes weight to the front of the car a little more.
I only have to put 30 lbs in mine for Nasa TT3 so I wasn't as worried about the weight. Mine is under the carpet on the passenger side and you can barely tell it is there!
For the metal I used 1/2 in plate cut to 1' square and 12x6" from the local welding supply house. They weigh 20 and 10 lbs. If you used 2" and placed it in the same location you could put 120 lbs there. If its safe to put that much on the floor pan is beyond my knowledge, but I know that I can stand on the pan from experience at 210 lbs...
If only they weighed the car with me in it, I'd be all set! From what I understand, you're allowed to refuel up until the last run. After the last run, you pull off and straight onto the scales.
Steel beams with melted lead shot poured into them in a cage bolted to the the passenger footwell where the footrest use to be in my car. Don't have any pics handy but its relatively easy to add/remove weight as we run the car in SSM with the weight and XP without.
Ideally, I'd like for it to be easily removable like that. Smelting lead shot and pouring it into a cage might be a bit beyond my abilities yet, but I'm definitely interested! Do you have any photos of your setup?
1) I used double stick tape to attach two 5lb weights to the floor directly under the passenger seat.
2) I drilled through the passenger seat and used carriage bolts to attach a 30lb bar of lead to the seat. I pulled back a bit of the cushion to gain access. You can't see it.
3) There is a collection of steel bar and angles weighing 35lbs that's bolted to angles that go under the front sway bar. The angles replace the spacers between the bar clamps and the car.
4) E153 trans
5) turbo and supercharger, 2 intercoolers and 3 heat exchangers and fans.
6) splitter
7) wing
I'm going to move the 30lb bar to the underside of the crash structure to get some more weight on the nose.
What are your thoughts on weight placement at center of mass vs at the nose like that. I was told to get close to COG, but it seems to make sense to me to put it farther forward? I just put mine in the passenger seat floor for now cause it was easy.
I think the person meant center of polar moment not center of Cg. You want it as low as possible though. Moving it forward or rearward is not the end of the world? if you get any other weight benefits you are looking for. However, no exceptions to as low as possible.
my personal favorite multipurpose is Fred having multiple heavy batteries in his car as ballast. Were I to do things over or redo I'd probably do the same. The lightweight batteries aren't the most reliable
Now that I'd love to see. To be able to leave my car for more than a few days without having it completely discharge AND help with my weight issue? That sounds perfect
I found some cheap weights on amazon [ free shipping ! ] and used those in my Elan. We built a frame and bolted them into the seat bolt holes [ and some additional hole were made as well ]
@dallasreed Are the 4 nuts the only thing holding it in or are there 4 more in the back? Any issues with the plates bouncing inside the frame? I like the way you have it set up.
