Lotus Club of SoCal - Beginner HPDE @ Streets of Willow

Hello Everyone!

Have you ever had the desire to drive your car on a real track, but have been a little nervous about damaging your car?

Do you wish you knew more about how your car would handle if you pushed it a bit more?

If you could do this in a low-car-count, safe, controlled, supervised environment, would you be interested in the opportunity?

The LCoSC has put together a driver education class for Club members. The class is planned to be held at Streets of Willow on the 17th of December, 2017. The actual driving class will be preceded by a Tech Day on the 19th of November that will educate the attendees on the basic mechanics of your car that you need to understand prior to the track day. This will set your car up for a tech inspection to make sure it’s track ready. This Tech Day will also cover what you will need for the class as well as what to expect during that day. There will be plenty of opportunity to get your questions answered too.

On the day of the class, the driving education itself will consist of alternating class room instruction and driving exercises. Driving activities will include track lead-follow, skid pad exercises, threshold breaking, slalom, a coached oval-track, and open track time to wrap up the day. Each of these topics will have an associated class room activity. Plenty of coaches and instructors will be available to assist everyone during the exercises and coaching is included in the price of the class.

Here is our current plan: (to be refined and locked down as we get closer and closer to the actual date.)

Tech Session on Sunday, the 19th of November. This is a mandatory pre-track meeting that will cover:
  • Tech Inspection, how to make sure your car is track-ready
  • What you need to do before arriving at the track in December
  • Any required and / or optional track gear
  • What to expect on the track day
  • Answering any other questions the attendees have
The Track Experience on December 17th, a Sunday, from 8am - 4pm. Current agenda:

7:00 – 7:30, Arrivals & Tech Inspection
7:30 – 8:00, Sign-in, Administration and gathering
8:00 – 8:45, Classroom
  • Greeting / Introductions / Schedule Orientation / Gear Check / Assigning Instructors
  • Expectations for the day
  • Flag Orientation / Pit – Hot Pit
  • Learn to Look!!!
  • General Car Dynamics
  • Safety first
8:45 – 10:00am, Track
  • “Lead Follow” warm-up in small car groups
  • Slalom exercises
10:00 – 10:30, Classroom
  • Instructor Observations / Debriefing / Open Q & A
  • Braking, Turning in, turning out, and the “Line”
  • Speed, Shifting, Gears and RPMs
  • Weight Transfer
10:30 – 11:30, Track
  • Coached Oval ‘Cone’ Track on the skid pad, learning the “line”
11:30 – 12:15, Lunch
12:15 – 12:30, Classroom
  • Instructor Observations / Debriefing / Open Q & A
  • Short Accelerated “Lead Follow” Orientation
12:30 – 1, Track
  • Accelerated “Lead Follow” run in small car groups
  • Controlled release individual track laps

1:30 – 2:30, Track
  • Skid pad exercise (Understeer / Oversteer)
  • Threshold Breaking Exercises (Acceleration / Deceleration)
2:30 – 3:00, Classroom
  • Instructor Observations / Debriefing / Open Q & A
  • Reminder of Flags and track etiquette
  • Run group identification and orientation
3:00 – 3:30, Track
  • Open Track, controlled release for wide spacing of cars
3:30 – 4:00, Classroom
  • Instructor Observations / Debriefing / Open Q & A
  • Where do you go from here?
4:00 End of the Day

A few other items for now:
  1. This is expected, and designed to be a low-car-count event, so don’t delay in securing your spot
  2. Food will be provided
  3. We are in discussion with several photographers to capture shots of everyone in action. Photos and potential video will be available to the drivers at a low to no cost (we’re still working on this.)
  4. We are planning to have a 1 to 1, coach / student ratio, so everyone will have a designated coach for the day
  5. If, during the track day, you feel uncomfortable with something we have planned, you are under no obligation to do that exercise.
  6. We will have ‘corner workers’ and medical available (this is a typical track event requirement that we have to comply with)

So that’s the plan. And we will be working diligently to pull off a very memorable event for everyone involved.
Sign up is here: Registration

We decided that the cost for this event is an unbelievable $190 with your GGLC member discount!!!

When you sign up it will ask you to select either the Intermediate / Advanced Group or the Novice Group. Go ahead and pick the Novice Group, but it doesn’t really matter because this is only being offered to entry level drivers.

Once you sign up you’ll be included in future info on this event as it’s developed. Oh, and if you know a Lotus owner that would be interested in this event, please tell them about it, and let us know so we can bring them up to speed.

Feel free to respond with any questions that you might have regarding this event. Matt Kaplan mathewkaplanATgmail.com , and (Mark Ditko, markATTheZenDude.com ) are leading this event and are the Board members responsible for the agenda and related activities.

In the Motorsportreg (MSR) sign-up process you are asked by default for a member number. However, the GGLC/LCOSC does not issue membership numbers so, when MSR prompts you for a membership number, simply ignore it or type in "NA" and click continue.

Cheers,
Kiyoshi

Not quite sure what happened, but the registration report only shows that you selected the membership and owe for it. There's no sign that the track event was selected. Try logging back into MSR and editing your entry.

If you continue having a problem email events"at"gglotus.org

Kiyoshi

This looks like a great event. Thanks to the club for putting it on.

Is it, however, suitable for those of us who are more at an intermediate level - have done several track days, had coaching, etc? It looks like there's only 1/2 hour of actual open track time.

05 Elise, ST, sports, touring, hardtop, DBA 4000 slotted discs, Ferodo DS2500 pads, Sector 111 gpan3, EP Tuning Quickrack, Pro Alloy rad, DS brace, HnT pad, front and rear tow hooks, CG lock, ORE double cup holder (caffeine for track); '86 911 Targa (sold); '68 MGB (being restored)

This event is a true educational event with a lot of in-car activities and probably slightly more time in the car versus classroom. We're still currently working on the exact agenda and nailing down the amount of classroom time needed, but this will not be a 'traditional' open track event and is being modeled closer to the Lotus driving school.

These are currently the 'in-car' activities and windows.

8:45 – 10:00am, Track, “Lead Follow” warm-up in small car groups, Slalom exercises
10:30 – 11:30, Track, Coached Oval ‘Cone’ Track
12:30 – 1, Track.Accelerated “Lead Follow”
1:30 – 2:30, Track, Skid pad exercises, Threshold Breaking Exercises
3:00 – 3:30, Track, Open Track

I'd still like an answer to my question about whether this is aimed at absolute beginners? Or is it suitable for those of us who have done track days and had some coaching but are not advanced HPDE drivers?

Also, who is doing the coaching? I've done the PDS at Buttonwillow, VARA U, and two car control clinics with the PCA, and the instruction has been indifferent at best. Or rather, it varies wildly from instructor to instructor. Some are excellent, others barely knew more than me.

This event is being aimed at beginners, or anyone who wants to sharpen their driving skills. The exercises - skid pad, slalom, braking and so on, as well as the classroom instruction would be valuable for anyone who hasn't ever done those things before, or haven't done them for a while. And there will be some people in the group that have track experience, and they could only benefit from the exercises. The event is being labeled for "beginners" because we are planning to have this event well organized, structured and controlled for optimum safety and attention to everyone's personal comfort level. If someone just wants to have maximum 'open track' time then this event is not for them. This is an 'educational' event for those people who want to put themselves and their cars through the paces to see what they, or their cars can do.

Regarding the coaching, we're still gathering coaches, but we do NOT intend to have 'indifferent' coaches. This is our first Lotus Club event like this and plan on making it very successful. And right now our 2 primary classroom instructors are Lotus Club Board members with pretty extensive track experience. We're also looking into having some supplemental video instruction on specific topics but are still working out those details.

Feel free to attend our next Board meeting on the 11th of November if you want to discuss this in more detail.
