What conditions cause the brake light to come on?

My brake warning light didn't extinguish after disengaging the parking brake today. Checked the brake fluid level, and the reservoir is full. Bad switch on the parking brake handle?

There are two things that can cause the brake light to come on, one is the parking brake, the other is a pressure differential between the front and rear sides of the brake system. If either the front or rear side of the hydraulic portion of the braking system receives more pressure when you apply the brake pedal it trips the light. The pressure differential can be caused by several different things such as a leak in either the front or rear system, a bad master cylinder, or a bad proportioning valve (very unlikely). If the light isn't on because the parking brake switch and there are no leaks present, I'd check (or have someone check) the master cylinder, chances are that an internal seal is leaking and causing the light.
