Lotus Elise Will Return to US in 2020

Lotus Elise Will Return to US in 2020

Lotus will bring the lauded Elise sports car back to the U.S., but driving enthusiasts will have to wait until at least 2020 to get their hands on one.

Sales of the lightweight British two-seater were halted in America in 2011 after it no longer met certain safety regulations and its exemptions expired. The company recently confirmed the Evora will make a return to the U.S. in the form of the 400, which arrives in December of this year. The Evora has been tweaked to get all the right safety certifications, and speaking to Automotive News, Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales said that similar upgrades will be made to the next-generation Elise, due out in 2020.

The struggle for Lotus will be keeping the next-generation Elise light while incorporating the necessary safety equipment like more airbags and changing the front crash structure to be more robust.

So, if I save $1000 a month till then, with some average interest can probably pay cash.

If there is a guarantee your wish comes true, I reserve one right now. $60k seems to be o.k. to me.

my guess what it says in the article - about 100kgs = 220 lbs.

** save ~10 lbs gain 1 hp ** EQ: Y=(190*X) / (1984-X) where Y is (HP) and X is (lbs)

I remember the Alfa 4c reportedly being a 2000lb car, but that number crept up pretty quick.

That was due to regulations though. Granted, that's the same case here with the Elise, the difference is that they already have a federalized baseline, so they know what it takes to get here

We can only hope. The new regime at Lotus has been talking about it for a bit. Good riddance Bahar!

There are reports that the next Camry is going with a turbo 4 to replace the current V6, so perhaps we'll get some version of that?

I hope they don't make it bigger to attract fat old customers that tend to buy Porsche Boxster, but if it is going to be 200 lbs heavier that is going to be a fat Elise

Very excited, but at the same time, 2020 is so far away I doubt Lotus is very far into the design process. Development budget is a big question. Imagine if the money Bahar raised was used to develop a few real cars instead of vaporware. So let's see.

I would gladly accept a 200 .lbs increase if the car had 300 hp and wider tires. It seems VERY hard to meet all the regulations and keep the car as light as the current model.

There's no way to do it unless you're going to add a lot of expense (and lotus owners are CHEAP!!). 400 lb difference between s1 and s2, wouldn't be shocked to see nearly the same.

I 2nd this..

If it were to happen, Lotus should just make all the 200+ federally mandated crap easy to remove, and not an eyesore when gone, also freeing up space for mods!

We'll obviously have to wait and see.

One has to indeed wonder if as a result of adding weight, if they'll still keep the size around the same, or if it'll be somewhat larger to accommodate things.- which while turning off purist, might make things more appealing to the kinds of buyers who can't deal with such a small car in the first place.

I think they have to make it more livable in order to make more sales. It will still more more raw that 99% of the cars on the market, so that's okay. Look at how refined the latest GT3 / GT4 cars from Porsche have become and those are some of the most raw mainstream cars on the market.
