I suppose you could try to argue that the bumper standard is an exemption and that somehow (?) this relates to the front plate mounting area.....but it's pretty thin.....(Source: Federal Registry)

Looks like we takes our chances......

Stephen.
It is thin. One cop let me off (in Ontario). Another gave me a ticket.

In court the judge did not accept that the bumper exemption equates to a plate exemption. But they did say I could hang the plate in the passenger area and waived the ticket. Again this was in Ontario, Canada.

Read the CFR Bumper Requirement....look at this.

(c) Protective criteria. (1) Each lamp or
reflective device except license plate
lamps
shall be free of cracks and shall
comply with applicable visibility requirements
of S5.3.1.1 of Standard No.
108 ( 571.108 of this chapter).

Obviously, the license plate lamp is exempted. So if there is to be no illumination, what is the purpose of having a plate on the vehicle, especially at night?

I guess I need to go to law school....naahhhh, then someone could call me a lawyer.

Stephen.

Hadn't had a problem with running without a front plate on either the G37 nor the Esprit.. 200 buck tax ? As long as I'm not getting it every day it's a small price to pay to prevent state required vandalizing..

Maybe I'll put a smallish decal showing I contributed to a police charity...think that might tip the scales?

In my state the exemption gets shot down because Lotus actually made available a federal front plate bracket. Ferrari and Lamborghini typically don't offer this, so it's easier to get the exemption.

I am planning to use a long (6-7") screw (M8) in place of the tow hook. I have drilled a hole through the license plate so that I can attach it to this screw. This will allow me to remove the front plate easily, and will "project" it about an inch away from the front grill/splitter.
Problem is I cannot find a suitably long M8 bolt. Any ideas?

Ohio law requires a front plate. Haven't got pull ove in the elise yet, but I did get pull over in my mini. Told the officer it wasn't a moving violation and she didnt have any other reasons to stop me. So she let me go

Just another way to collect some $$$

$200 for no front plate is nuts and obviously a way to just tack on some ticket tax income.

When I lived in LA, I didn't have a plate on the Porker, I never got pulled over for it. I did, however, get TWO tickets in the LAX parking facility. Cops patrolled the parking lots, looking for scofflaws without plates. Is there no more important crime you could be using resources to solve?

Long story short, I switched to a private parking facility when leaving the car at LAX. No more tickets. Now in TX, and no plates on the cartoon car...time will tell...

It's a joke, but I caved last year and went with the heavy velcro solution after ornery cops on two occasions stopped me for having the plate on the dash. Windshield glare and a shallow viewing angle are what make this "illegal". Ironically, the annual safety inspections allowed the dash display!

It comes down to picking your fights. This isn't worth it as you're giving cops a reason to stop you time after time.

From Dallas, Texas here. I've never gotten a ticket. I get 1-3 warnings a year, and have been getting them since I first started driving back in 98. I used to collect them. Its a massive joke with my friends and colleagues. I dont mind being stopped every once in a while. I simply chalk it up to DWB

Got my first warning for no plate this week. I had the plate in the rear if my Evora. I am not mounting in permanently, so I hope I can go another 19 months until the next stop.

This is one ridiculous law.

Last week driving the back roads from Austin to Dallas, on 281 north of Lampasses, I was pulled over and given a "Written Warning" for no front license on my GTI. My hunch is that next time, there is a good chance it will be a fine, since I've now been warned.

A bit of history.. I've been in Texas for 27+ years and have never had any issue with no front license plates on any of my cars. But, I'm now worried..

Also, everyone I talked to, laughed(!) at the mention of an exemption....

Go ahead and fight it in California if you wish. Two things to consider though.

First the exemption is for the crash test of the bumper not whether a plate can be attached. The ONLY thing most judges would care about is that the plate is attched, right there.

Second, and probably more important for these kinds of laws, is that for every ticket that is admittied or found guilty the court will order you to pay an ADDITIONAL 50% of the fine to the "Courthouse Construction Fund". That's just how they build them around here.

Judge sure wants a new courthouse and after an unbiased trial they let you know how much you shall contribute. Sorry, the law states NO tax money to be used. They gotta earn new offices. I'm sure new offices will give better decisions in the future.

After being pulled over, again, for a 10 over on the tollway when returning from Le Mans, I got a verbal warning for the plate but only after he handed me my $160+ ticket.

I was looking into solutions for the front plate already about a couple months ago when first hearing of this new addition to the law, but have yet to come across something I like. Some were talking that, by November, there could be yet another change—then again, people are usually just good at talking.

Edit: To add on to what you guys were saying, one cop gave me this spiel about how it aids in resolving issues where you run through a toll and the guy behind you is charged double, even with my brightly painted toll tag sitting right in front of him. Entertained, I was.

Same here. Happens at least 3x per year. I always have the plate in the car with me and just tell the officer "the bracket just broke and a new one has been ordered, should have it in the mail soon."

Never been ticketed.

Anybody using this product? Its cheaper than a $200 ticket. You can drive around with the plates hidden, then when the cop stops you, you press the button and the plates show up.

I didnt see if this was already done before so forgive me if this is not new and I know this has probably been beat to death, but my solution to the front plate mount came from Home Depot. It is a steel framing tie made by Simpson part number 128T. Cost about $6 or so and found near the framing lumber isle. Two bends about 45 deg and drill one hole for the M8. Used some double sided foam tape along the bottom.
