2nd test drive; a sweet reunion.

Ever since my somewhat negative first experience with the Elise, I've felt compelled to give the car another shot, and finally convinced myself this morning to make the 125-mile drive to Mid Rivers Lotus to do just that.

My previous salesman, Steve Brown, was gone, but the Autumn Gold Elise I had driven 2 years, 1 month, and 15 days ago remained. Yeah, you read that right.

My new salesman, Charlie Brown, was nice and trusting, and soon I was tooling down smooth highway C, ready to give the ol' girl a chance at redemption. Cruising in 3rd at 55 mph, I blip the throttle hard, down-shift to 2nd, let out on the clutch and stab the gas.

Oh. My. God!

The adrenaline instantly mixes with the sound, the sun, and wind to create this brilliant experience I just can't put into words. It's a good thing this is a Lotus board, 'cause there's no way to describe it. 8,300 comes and goes through numerous gears, and my face begins to hurt from grinning. Wow, just wow. Hard on the brakes several times produces no fade whatsoever.

Through some fast sweepers and I'm just in love with the way this car turns, I mean, this thing is reading my mind! I flip the car this way and that, getting rough with her, breaking the rules, lifting when I shouldn't, stabbing the throttle too early in the apex, using the brakes like I'm stamping out a fire, and through it all the car remains composed and rewards me with confidence.

Wow.

I pull over at some farm in the middle of nowhere, get out, and just stare. Is this really the same car? Yep. I'm simply not the same me. I stare a bit longer, trying to sort it out, how I missed who she really was the first time around. I give up, get in, and enjoy the 20 minute rush back to the dealership.

Could I nit-pick? Yes.

- I don't like the seat, or its lack of adjustment
- I don't like the steering wheel, or its lack of adjustment
- I don't like the cold, amusement-park-ride feel of the interior
- I don't like the *seemingly* cheap fit/finish
- I don't like the soft-top
- I don't like ingress/egress with the top on
- I don't like the sound at idle
- I don't like the price

Regardless of the things listed above, I LOVE this car!!! How I missed falling in love with her the first time around I'll never know. My STi still fits the bill better than the Elise, but I may just get one anyway, after all, you only live once.

If you go through with the purchase, let me know what you think of the dealer. I picked up a Chrome Orange car through them via proxy (Auto Europe is my local dealer). My car was on their lot for over a year, so I was a bit apprehensive. Turned out good though. I was wondering how long the Autumn Gold car was going to be there.

They offered the Autumn car to me for $39K, but the car is pretty edgy, I'd rather buy a nice used example from an elisetalk member, I'll just have to sell my STi first.

No offense, but do you always beat on cars during a test drive? Especially since it doesn't seem like you are ready to buy any time soon?

I didn't beat on the car, forgive me for making it sound as if I did, I was only aggressive with it in an effort to get to know, or find fault with it. In any case, I certainly drove it easier than my original salesman (Steve Brown) did.

What does the timeline have to do with me driving the car? I feel lucky to have been able to drive a fully broken-in demonstrator, had the car had 2 miles on it, I would have had a very different experience.

That is a horse of a different color. I thought the AG car was sub 1k mileage.

haha

I can't say that I -like- the price of anything, but that's one thing I don't think anyone can fault a lotus for...the price is pretty damn reasonable for a car of its class.

You pretty much don't like the things most of us love about the car. Based on that, even if you think you like the car now, within a year you will probably hate it if it is going to be your main ride. I would say don't buy an Elise, it does not sound like the car for you seriously, these cars pretty much are either love or hate. Save your self the time and money and look at other cars such as the Corvette, Evo, or Caymen, Z4 or even a tricked out Miata....

Currently:
1964 Volvo 1800S
1965 Sunbeam Tiger
1966 Pontiac GTO
2005 Lotus Elise
2011 VW Touareg - Support vehicle for all of the above

It blows your STI away.
Just look at it.
Park your STI on the side of an Elise in the parking lot of a theatre and watch to see which car people come by to admire.
I would imagine fat people have problems getting into and out of an Elise, but they also have problems getting into and out of crown vics, and SUV's.
Of course, I'm not saying you're a portly man at all. Are you?
I've owned 6 corvettes, granted they're harder to get in and out of than a Lincoln Continental. It's the price you pay to drive a Sports car.
I'll gladly devise a method of entering and exiting to own an Elise.
Cheap fit and finish?????
It's one of the finest handling, best looking sports cars ever created. Bar none.

I'm glad you purchased yours for how it looks, I however, am more concerned with how it performs on a day-to-day basis, and to that end, my STi easily out-performs the Elise.

You people crack me up. I'm 5'5" @ 145, muscular build. The car is difficult to get out of, get over yourself.

No it's not, it's the price you pay to drive an Elise, as its competitors are much easier on ingress/egress.

Yeah, I could talk about 20 things I noticed, but you'd just say "aw man, it looks so much better though".

Best is a subjective term, not an objective term, so thanks for your opinion, though I don't recall asking for it.

your not a lotus person....everything you've listed as you dont like a lotus person would. Do yourself and all of us a favor and buy a evo9 and be happy...but if you want something lotus like get a miata and do a v8 swap.

Studies show 100% of people die. Might as well have some fun.

I think you're right, I'm not a Lotus person, but why on earth would I buy an EVO when I own an STi, for the bad build quality? V8-swap a Miata? Are you serious? I think I've talked myself out of the Elise until I can afford to have it as a 2nd car.

On a more serious note, why are all these $55,000 Elises' with less than 10K on the clock selling for $30K? Is the market flooded, or did the supercharged versions kill the N/A versions?

[QUOTE=On a more serious note, why are all these $55,000 Elises' with less than 10K on the clock selling for $30K? Is the market flooded, or did the supercharged versions kill the N/A versions?[/QUOTE]

First of all the reason many low mileage (less than 10k miles) cars are available is that the Elise is NOT an everyday driver, but rather a weekend or occasional driver for MANY (not all) owners. As for the price, they seem to range in the high $20k's to mid-$30k's for '05 and '06 cars, depending on condition, mileage and equipment. On occasion, I've even seen new '07's in the high $30k's to the low $40k's, and no not everyone is selling their NA Elise for the SC, as a Lotus Supercharge kit will be or is available for under $5k, which for those who can not live without a supercharger may find a much more attractive alternative than spending the $25k differential for a new SC. Lastly, an Elise in the $30k's is not terrible from a depreciation perspective, as I can provide you plenty of examples of cars that depreciated far greater as a percentage of their original price (which by in large was not $55k), I paid $48k out the door for a new and well-equipped '06 with touring and sport packages, hardtop and starshield. And get this, I DID NOT EVEN TEST-DRIVE THE CAR. I just flew down to So. Cal and drove it 400 miles to my house in one day. Priceless...and for all other things there's Master Card.
