I purchased a Yellow Purist edition in February after going through much the same thought process. For me, the difference in price was worth it to buy a new car with a known history. My car had 400 miles on it when I picked it up from the dealer, and the ECU dump didn't show anything that worried me (a few 8000 rpm shifts, but all at proper engine temp). I confirmed with the dealer the full 36 month warranty.
The one purchased at $35,000 also strikes me as an anomaly. Feel free to PM me if you want to know what I paid as another relevent data point.
Good luck with your Lotus purchase - whether it's new or used!
