But it's not a Europa... but a Lotus 62, which sort of looks like a Europa... Only 2 ever built. One is now in Japan and other in SoCal.

Cheers,
Kiyoshi

For comparison, here is the business end of a Banks 62s replica. A modern interpretation.

2nd Choice

I'm partial to the Europa, since it was my first Lotus. I'm sure people would respect it more if they realized it was second place to Lola in the competition to become the Ford GT40.

Here is a little something I wrote on the Type 62:

Quote:
Type 62 1969

As Lotus was preparing to move upmarket, it recognized the need for a bespoke Lotus engine, rather than one that used a Ford bottom end (as great as the Lotus TC engine may be). However, the most complex portion of the drive train to develop is the top end. In order to save development time Lotus chose to use an existing production block. The 1995cc block out of the Vauxhall Victor was chosen because it shared the same architecture as the planned Lotus bottom end. It was mated to a Lotus designed and built aluminum alloy dual overhead cam 4 valve head. The resulting engine was dubbed LV 220 and subsequently LV 240 (LV for Lotus Vauxhall, 220 and 240 for hp). It was this engine that was eventually the Lotus 900 series of engines that powered the Elite/Eclat/Excel/and Esprit.

In order to test the new engine a racing platform was sought and for the express purpose of testing the new engine the Type 62 was born. Many like to group it with Europas because of its mid engine layout and Europa on steroids look. Unlike the Type 47 which did use a Europa chassis and body, the 62 has nothing in common with them (though they were entered in races as Europas). The chassis is a Martin Wade designed tubular space frame. Front and rear suspension is typical Lotus formula car with outboard discs all around. Bodywork was hinged front and rear for easy access. Two cars were produced and appeared in Gold Leaf livery and were driven with some success in International and domestic races usually by John Miles. The racing program successfully identified issues with the engine, primarily the Vauxhaull block which led Lotus to make changes in their own design. Once development of the engine was over then cars were shelved.

And here is a prior LT post with more Type 62 pics:

The 62 has amazing lines. The original Europa - kinda like the Pontiac Aztek. Only few could love it.

I agree and love the appearance of the 62, but it was aerodynamically inefficient and created a lot of lift which is the picture show a myriad of spoilers and other aerodynamic aids.

72 Lotus Europa TC

I always loved the Europa since I first saw one (70's) on the Oval at The Ohio State University for a sports car club membership drive. Many years later I got one and many years later I decided to redo it as a tribute to the Gold Leaf racing 47. It's not an Elise but a great car in it's own right and I still enjoy getting it on the road for a spin. A few porn pictures attached. Warning NSFW due to naked car.

A Europa was the first Lotus I lusted after. Almost bought an S2 but it fell through. Bought my +2 shortly thereafter and never regretted it, as it was so reliable I probably would have ditched the Europa and all things Lotus within a year if I had gone that way

While the S1 Elise is both stylistically and conceptually an updated Europa, so in a way in buying the Exige I have come full circle
