08+ CANBus info?

...yes another one of those threads.

I've read thru the countless prior posts about folks dealing with the 07 and earlier cars.

I've got a CANBus adapter hooked up to my 08 S240, and the adapter card is working with a Raspberry Pi.

Here is a sample from the logs:

(1468302665.879790) can0 400#81790F17FFD28000
(1468302665.980181) can0 400#81790F27FFD28000

It looks like the "401#000..." is repeated on every 6th frame. What is it? Something for timing?

Some of the past threads for 07 and earlier cars mentioned that the frames all started with 8 and were just the info for the cluster, nothing more.

I'm seeing frames starting with both 7 and 8? What's the difference?

Is there any thread or reference for the 08+ cars and how I can decode the raw CAN codes?

There's just one CAN bus on the 08+ cars, correct? No extra wires I need to somehow plug into? No second port? I was expecting to find a reference for all these codes that would give me IAT, boost, etc.

I keep finding mentions of 08+ cars having this info available, but no threads seem to detail exactly how to get it.

If I've missed some sticky post on this, any links would be greatly appreciated.

crickets, eh?

@cybernet knows how to decode the messages. a link to his wiki was posted in garw s custom gauge cluster thread.

i believe that although the '08+ lotus uses the CAN bus for obd, the sensor data is not automatically transmitted. again, cybernet may know how to get the ecu to tell you what you want.

i would guess that the two messages you're seeing are
0x400: gauge cluster control
0x401: error message (ex. tire pressure monitor errors)

the interpretation of these messages is a bit tougher unless you can read ecu code or want to inject your own 0x400 or 0x401 CAN messages onto the bus. alternately you could experiment with operating conditions while logging order to correlate bytes with gauge cluster activity.

on my '05, i injected the 0x400 message faster than the ECU, and i switched each bit in the message stepwise in order to watch the gauge activity. some functions are obvious like the status lights, tach and speedometer. the gas gauge signal gets filtered so it doesn't move fast.

Do you have a link to either the gauge cluster thread you mentioned or the wiki itself?

Here's a link to that post in garw's thread:

Here's a link to a long thread which discusses the later model year cars' CAN packets to the gauge cluster:

start on page 3 and see if you can understand the list of the CAN packet bytes from charlieX near post 48 and 50 and dstevens in post 61.
