Day 9 - St. Paul, Minnesota

We travelled from Miles City Montana to St. Paul Minnesota in one long day.

1) North Dakota sign
2) Scenery in North Dakota
3) Scenery in North Dakota
4) Minnesota sign
5) Friends in St. Paul

I have a good friend who lives in St. Paul. We promised him that we would arrive by about 8 pm. To do that from Miles City we had to leave around 4:30 am Central time (3:30 am Mountain time!).

Once we crossed the boundary into North Dakota from Montana the scenery became spectacular. I stopped the car many times to get clear pictures of the terrain. As I mentioned to my daughter our trip was becoming "bogged down" with these scenery stops.

It turned out that the really nice views in North Dakota vanished about 30 minutes past the border. At that point it became very flat, sort of like Montana had looked.

The last picture was taken at my friend's poolside. His parents from Toronto happened to be visiting at the same time as us.

Sorry I missed it. Had I attended though it would have only been for an hour or two.

Day 10 - Chicago, Illinois

This was the shortest leg of our trip and was an easy drive.

1) A thumbs up
2) A little nap
3) The minivan wasn't big enough?
4) My friends in Chicago
5) Neighborhood watch

A girl in a Camaro or TransAm appreciated the Lotus.

My daughter was actually awake most of the trip but I did catch her napping once in a while.

When I saw the minivan I thought I should have stopped and offered my suggestions on packing light.

I met my Chicago friends for dinner and later we went back to their house and let off some fireworks. The fireworks were for the July 4th holiday but they moved the schedule ahead to celebrate Canada Day (July 1).

We have neighborhood watch signs in Ontario but they don't look like a Spy vs. Spy comic. Ours have rather subdued pictures of houses with eyes.

Day 11 - Toronto, Ontario

This was our final day of driving.

1) Leaving Chicago
2) An oversized load
3) My daughter still happy
4) Farm and wind power
5) Washed again + an oil change

Somehow it seemed odd to be finally driving home. Each of the previous days we had gotten up early and had planned to arrive at either a hotel or a friend/relative's house.

We decided to take the scenic route out of Chicago along the water front.

On the way back I spotted a truck hauling something larger than itself. Something that large beside an Elise is quite intimidating.

My daughter was the perfect passenger on this trip. She never complained about the long drives and as you can see she was still energetic even after 11 days on the road.

In Michigan I noticed that many of the farms now have wind turbines on their properties.

The car finally received a much needed wash and an oil change. My wife usually thinks my car washes are not essential but at least this one was.

So that was the end of our trip.

Prior to the trip, I had been concerned that the pace might prove too hectic. Somehow though I never felt tired driving, despite the long hours.

The desire to see all of Canada has been a dream for many years. Seeing it together with my daughter was very special. The fact that the Lotus held up was certainly a bonus.

Gas Mileage

I just finished calculating my gas mileage for the trip.

It worked out to 6.9 L / 100 km which is about 34 US mpg or 41 British mpg.

Who ever said a sports car cannot be practical?
