Camaro 1LE track Day Impressions

Took my daily driver Camaro to the track with my son on Friday. Lots of fun. This is the same track Phil from BOE set the track record at 1:35. I was a bit slower...

The car is ~3700 pounds with 455 hp/455 torque.

It overcomes this with wide front tires, Brembo brakes at each corner, Electronic Differential, and magnetorheological shocks. It's hard to describe the feeling with very little body roll. This lap was done using the "PTM" traction management modes. I couldn't get a clean lap with PTM off but I feel like I would be about a second faster.

The best lap I've measured with my Exige is ~1:44. My guess is that I'm driving the Exige like a large rear wheel drive car and could do well learning how to slow down less in anticipation of the corners. The Cosworth software for the 1LE works in tandem with the information from the OBD2 and GPS to tell me that I need to be on the throttle and brakes a higher percentage of the time.

Let me know if you are up for a Fast Friday or track event up here. It would be good to get another Lotus on the track! I heard Heartland Park is open again. I wouldn't mind getting on the new surface with some other Lotus enthusiasts.

Tire technology is progressing at such a rapid rate that even these 4000 lbs cars with huge tires are putting down fantastic lap times.

I think you are completely correct on tires. The high performance threshold on tires and need to build heat in even street tires now has created unbelievable capabilities. The Cosworth Toolkit software that comes with the PDR in this car recorded a max cornering g of 1.31 on the factory tires.

The downside to this is it's made the cars somewhat less fun because you can't get sideways or loose on the street like the past. This reduces the driving sensation. Maybe that will make light cars like ours always more fun.
