Which of these 4 sports cars would you want?

Imagine the following.

You're an American male who loves sports cars. You love your current sports car, but as men are wont to do with their giving beloveds, you're just a tad bored of seeing her every day.

You want to buy a new, and only new, play thing. You really don't want to spend more than $140k and you aren't interested in buying a $100k car with $40k in options (ahem... Porsche). You also don't want a used super car due to maintenance and insurance (Mclaren, Lamborghini). Kit cars are a pain to register, so they're out.

While any money saved is a bonus, it's far less important than choosing the right car. You've narrowed it down to the following vehicles:

- Jaguar F Type SVR
- Mercedes AMG GT S/C
- Lotus Evora 410 sport
- Corvette Z06

Added:

- Viper ACR
- 911 GT3
- Wait for ZR1
- Wait for V6 Exige

Answer this question as though you're buying for yourself. What do you value in a car that is reflected in these four? What would your decision logic look like? Do any of them absolutely not appeal to you and why? Any other cars not listed that you'd like?

If you love sports cars as you say, it has to be the Evora 400.

See this: https://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f170...-400-a-378353/

The only thing missing is a removable top like the Vette...

(also, this is a Lotus forum, so what do you expect?)
XHILR8N! and Parko like this.

True. This is a Lotus forum founded on the basis of the impending release of the 111 platform to the US back in 2003. Most of the community is made up of 111 owners. I'm not sure everyone loves the Evora. There certainly wasn't much fanfare when the 2976 lb. curb weight was first announced. I think most of us were quite disappointed.

Just thought there may be some differing opinions. Certainly the Evora is more like the other cars in the list than the Elige.

I'd wait for the ZR1. If you can't wait the Z06 can be had for a little over $70K. It has been plagued by overheating but supposedly that has been solved for 2017 models. Time will tell. I have a 2016 Z51 and looked at a few Z06s a week ago. If they would have given me a decent trade price I might be driving one now.

Nothing against the 400, I just don't think it has enough "bite" for me. At $100K+, I don't want to have to modify a new car for more power/torque. I'm not sure there's a lot of headroom left in that motor (stock block and internals).

I'd get the Grand Sport. Almost all of the goddies without that troublesome engine. Cool fender slash and racing history too.

The problem is it's nearly the same cost as the Z06.

I didn't know about the Z06 cooling issues. Wonder if there's a recall.

I find the GS interesting, but it almost does seem rational to bump up to the Z06.

Many journalists say it's the "sweet spot", but it's hard to turn down more power when offered. A GS with Z07 package is basically Z06 money.

Checking AutoTrader, there's a litany of Grand Sports being listed at well below MSRP, like $56K. This seems to be some sleazy sale tactic that includes a bunch of GM incentives.

Is it a concern that the C8 is on its way?

Really depends on what you consider a sports car. For me it's only the last two, driving focus. JAG is more a marketing machine, sold on it's sound to people who will never really drive it hard. Merc - ditto.

- Lotus Evora 410 sport - (lack of) Resale value scare me. Tough choice, I'm really not into this car as much as the Exige. As far as a Lotus is concerned the Evora is basically their version of a sedan. putting flame suit on...... now.

- Corvette Z06 - I don't meet the minimum old man age requirement - aside from that a great car, cheap parts, and huge community.

Corvette.

Not much horsepower, heavy and very expensive.

To me the Vette is too much like a sedan. Driving home from the strip tonight I saw 7 different Vettes. To many of them out there on the road for my taste. Out of the choices given though I would take the Vette.

#1 what is most fun to drive, performance, feedback, dynamics, design.....410 sport for me. I don't care about resale value or other non sense stuff like extensive options list and the like that add complexity and bloat to a car.

** save ~10 lbs gain 1 hp ** EQ: Y=(190*X) / (1984-X) where Y is (HP) and X is (lbs)

Honestly, what should be on the list is the Viper ACR. Hands down the ultimate muscle car that is finally user-friendly. Also the last year it is available and has been selling like hotcakes (given you like hotcakes).

If Lotus fails to bring the S380 into the US, I guess the Lotus Evora 410 sport would have to do; I still don't like the busy styling goings on at the rear end.

I think it's a little unfair to say the Merc isn't a sports car. It ticks all the same boxes as a Corvette or Evora or a 911. It just comes from a luxury brand.

The Jag is an interesting one. It wants to be a sports car, feels and sounds like one, but has a slushbox automatic and a grotesque weight problem.

Still, I can't see how else you'd categorize it. It could be called a GT, but so could the Evora. It's not exactly civilized or easy to live with.

And the sound IS intoxicating!

I agree with you the F type is very enticing, I looked at one when my Exige was at the dealer. The fit and finish is first class, nicely balanced size wise, the auto rag top was fun to use; and my girlfriend instantly said yes - as she hates to ride in my 260S.

However, once you've experienced the essence of lightness, the extra mass on these fast cars that weigh a couple of tons, is immediately felt dynamically.

I completely forgot about it. In my mind, the Viper is dead. If there are still some out there, it would probably win my vote.

Vipers will always be special.

I didn't realize we could add to the list. I second the Viper ACR recommendation. My neighbor's 2016 TA is a monster, the ACR is a beast.

Since we can add cars...
1. BAC Mono - assuming I could make it street legal in the US.
2. Porsche 911 GT3 - This was actually my first pick last year, but decided on the Exige instead. I'll switch to a Porsche once I get all soft and can't handle the brutality of driving my Exige on the street.

Nobody said we could add to the list, I just didn't ask for permission. The ACR is more balanced and faster than the Z06, both in a straight line and around the track. It is also more exclusive. On the downside it hasn't held it's value well.
