What do Lotus and Ural have in common?

I have sinned. I have strayed from my Lotus mania and bought a toy that is not a Lotus!

My new toy is a Ural Patrol. FOr those who have no idea what a Ural (https://www.imz-ural.com/) is, it is a side car motorcycle. Before the Soviets and the Nazis started bludgeoning each other in WWII, they had a non aggression agreement. There are varying stories, but somehow the Soviets got a hold of 5 BMW R71 military sidecar rigs and reverse engineered them and started producing their own version called the M72. These units saw combat throughout WWI. The factory was moved to the Ural Mountains out of fear that the original location could be reached by German bombers, hence the name Ural. After The Great War (as the Russians refer to WWII) ended they continued production and have continued to do so until present with very little change to their outward appearance and only incremental changes to their mechanical specification.

As I researched the bike, and now that I own one I have found that Lotus and Ural have several things in common.

1. They have doggedly stuck to their formula from the outset of the company
2. They both have a continual parade of special or limited editions to stimulate sales
3. The technical specifications are interesting (though Lotus is high tech and Ural low tech)
4. They both draw interest from outsiders - so much so that they have coined the phrase Ural Delay Factor (UDF) to describe the delays brought on by inquiries from outsiders.
5. Their owners like to hang out with each other.
6. They both offer some difficulty in working on them becuase of packaging
7. They are both incredibly fun to drive(ride)

I am curious to know if there are other LTers who also own a Ural?

Very cool. I virtually grew up in a sidecar. I'll have to dig up a photo.
