'06 Exige TB repair

While undertaking an overall TB cleanup job I even unsnapped the black plastic cover which hides the stepper pinion and throttle gear train. Unfortunately the intermediate gear, unsecured on its stub shaft fell out. I spent hours trying to I. D. the six pins sticking out of the cover socket, twidling the stepper at will in an effort to get the engine to run w/o repeatedly throwing the P0638 code. Somehow I finally managed but wonder if there is a scientific way of resyncing the stepper and plate.
