Need a Trailer - Trailex/Featherlite Recommendations

I need a trailer to take my car to the track for the occasional DE/Timed Trial event. Trailex and Featherlite seem to get consistent good reviews (and appear to have a ready acceptance in the secondary market). In fact, I can't ever seem to find a used one.

I think I'm going to wind up ordering new from a local dealer. So...for hauling an Exige or possibly a 911, can anyone recommend size/key options? Also, are custom ordered trailer prices usually "negotiable"?

Thanks,
Will

If you're ordering a trailex just talk to them and let them know what you'll be towing. They'll let you know what model. Talk to Carl, I think he handles most of the sales. Bargaining on the price??? Guess it can't hurt to try.

Have had my trailex for almost 10 years. Sits outside in my driveway and still looks great. Easy to just push around if you need to move it. More expensive to begin with but well worth the cost in the long term.

Presume you're considering an open trailer?

The 7541 will surely fit an Exige, however, I'd advise stepping up to the 8045, this has much better resale as a wider range of cars will fit, plus the ramps are longer = shallower angle, so easier to get the car on/off. As advice above, speak to Carl who will certainly be able to help you out, but some quick advice on options:

- make sure you get the "sail" at the front, otherwise the front of the car on trailer will get covered in rock chips
- the tire rack is a great option
- the spare tire holder is a must - I have had a blown tire!
- the storage box is useful, but fairly small - I dump my wheel chocks / straps and a couple of boards to help the car get on the ramps in there and its full
- the aluminum wheels are a "must" as the standard painted steel wheels will rust and look like %$%# within 12 months

One last point - when strapping your car down, to avoid fouling the front splitter, think about taking your straps diagonally *** down *** from the front wheels, under the aluminum cross bar and then back up and over to the d-rings which should be at the front of the v-nose - this will only make sense when looking at your car on the trailer, but bear it in mind as an option

Almost forgot - Trailex usually run a sale in the Feb / Mar timeframe, so, yes, there should be a discount + in the current economy, are you kidding? I'm sure there is room to negotiate!

Good info, thanks guys.

I've looked at the Auto Europe (not in person). Looks nice, but probably a bit more than I need.

Open trailers? There are tons of open featherlites on the market. try ebay and racingjunk.com. I wouldn't buy new, personally, unless you can't find one locally. For a 911, you probably want the 18' model. You can probably fit an elise/exige on the 14' model but resale is much better on the 18'.

I personally wouldn't bother with the air dam, I've never had one and never had any rock chip issues.

I bought a new Featherlight enclosed trailer a couple of years ago. I was disappointed in the quality of the welds and that the cross frames were not on a consistent center. It tows well, has nice features and is light.

Yeah, that is the problem. I can't find anything within a day's drive.

I purchased a Featherlight a few years back. Sorry, don’t remember model size, think a 14 ft but it was a 3110 series. It is the best towing trailer I have owned in years of several steel open tarilers. As to discounting most likely available but, if dealer has a lot in inventory probably not on a custom order.
With that I purchased off the lot but with extras ordered. Airdam, tire rack, tie down tracks, alloy wheels and all up still at a good discount.
Note, Featherlight shows dam and tirerack separate, they don’t really fit together but it can be made to work.
