Question Tire Trailer Weight? Tongue Weight?

I have been tossing an idea around in my head for my Elise and was wondering what a light weight tire trailer weights and what the typical tongue weight would be.

Thanks!

Lancer,

More information please. A lightweight trailor to put the car on will be significantly different than a lightweight trailor for a motorcycle. As for tounge weigh, a class 3 hitch, which is the normal hitch most trucks have is rated to a max of 550lbs. If you are even thinking of putting a trailor on an elise I would guess the max the suspension could carry is a tounge weight of 110lbs, based on the max weight you can put in the trunk.

Please check the title, I'm talking about a tire trailer for 4 tires and a small tool box. I've done a search and found some info on a cheap harbor freight trailer and an expensive stainless steel trailer, but I am looking for some info on a light weight aluminum version.

Also, some of you guru's who are experienced with hauling a trailer, is there a formula for tongue weight compared to the overall trailer weight to keep the trailer stable. I want to avoid the tail wagging the dog! I've pulled a trailer many times with my truck, but I have a class 3 receiver hitch so minimizing the tongue weight has never been a concern.

Ok, I just dug around on the Trailex site and under custom found an aluminum one. Its 250 lbs and the Harbor Freight steel trailer is 130 lbs! The aluminum one should be lighter, so it sounds like they built the aluminum one like a tank. There has to be a lighter one out there if a steel trailer is 130 lbs.

The tongue weight on these all depends on loading. Normally expect and want around 40-50 pounds.

Since you have a pick-up truck...have you ever seen the products made by TracRac? I saw some pieces on a truck today that looked nice. I don't know if you could adapt anything for your use.

Cool stuff Tracy! I hadn't seen that before. I was asking about trailer info as I'm contemplating a trailer hitch for the Elise to haul tires. I just posted an idea here.

http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15617

Wanted to see if anybody had thought of attaching a trailer hitch using the 4 big bolts in the center of the diffuser and the center of the undertray before and let some of the experts poke some holes in it to make sure I'm not overlooking something.
