Using a car carrier to tow an Exige

Hey guys,

I'm PCSing from Alabama to Texas end of January. I am planning to rent a Budget moving truck and a car carrier (not the dolly, but all wheels on the carrier) to either tow my subaru or the exige.

I was planning on towing the Exige since it weighs about 700 lbs less than the Subaru.

Any tips and things I should watch out for? I was reading up on some kind of "wheel nets" so it wouldn't damage the vehicle... there were also wheel tie downs that go through the spokes. Which one would be better?

Thanks, I appreciate any suggestions or experiences shared.

My experience was with a U-Haul brand rather than Budget. I used a car carrier to haul a vintage Lotus body on a dolly rather than a complete car. So following is just a bit of general info....

For sure go over and look at the exact equipment with a tape measure. Ensure the approach angles of the ramps will work with your specific set-up. You are probably in good shape if you have the back-up option of loading the Subi if the Lotus won't load easily.

If you have a couple/few of 2 x 8 planks to hand when loading you can run the car on the planks and then on to the ramps to reduce approach angle a lot. Also watch/pre-measure clearance of the centre portion of the car hauler to exhaust; planks may be required to raise the tire deck height to avoid fouling the rails.

Saw lots of good tie down shots in the trailer section of the forum; perhaps others can better provide specifics or a link or two. Worth a look there at pic's to have tie-down options figured out ahead of time.

Not sure if Budget does the rental the same way as U-Haul, but forewarned is forearmed. U-Haul have software (available on the 'net ahead of time) to determine the ability of the tow vehicle to handle the weight of your car & rental trailer package. They (of course) didn't have Lotus in their software, which ended up causing a bunch of needless confusion at the rental place. Not an issue if the rental dude is reasonable; my first one wasn't. If you are using the rental truck as the tow vehicle might be a non-issue.

Fortunately the second U-Haul office was so incredibly disorganized that a revised approach worked out To get the software to work and make an acceptable rental agreement I eventually convinced them my Mini-Van was a Dodge Ram and and my 800 lb stripped body was an MG. Seemed like a lot of needless hassle at the time; would probably have driven me nuts on moving day.

Pull the front spoiler. U haul would not give me one, so I told them it was a 1968 VW. Ended up not towing it, but I don't see why it would not work. I have towed everything with a u haul trailer.

You can use a Uhaul just fine, It has to be the style with the collapsible Fender on the drivers side. You need a set of good long ramps like race ramps. Also when you strap it down you have to be sure to strap the back first and watch you dont damage the front spoiler(might want to just remove it.) when you clamp down the front.

no, I was planning on dropping one off in TX next weekend (I have to look for houses, etc.), fly back, then tow the car with the household goods.

There is a possibility that I may not even tow at all, because I'm trying to get airborne/pathfinder school for February.
