Ecu chips

Are there any performance enhancement chips out there for Non SE turbos? I realize if performance was a top priority then a person would most likely have an SE. I was just curious. Thanks! (89 non-SE turbo)

I ran mine for some time before I had the chargecooler connected to anything in front, in other words, pretty much what you have. It made a huge difference in driveability. They have learned a lot about turbocharging since our cars were made. Originally the car was very 'digital' in boost, it was either on boost or off boost. After, it was more like a small v8, much smoother with more manners and much less -SURPRISE BOOST TIME! It was not uncommon for people with the early cars to lose control on corners and curves if someone wasn't expecting the boost to come up suddenly and the drive wheels break loose. I'm sure others will chime in but I don't know why any of the chips wouldn't work with a non chargecooled car. The computer controls things in the state that the engine is in, chargecooler or not, it WILL be an improvement.Review: Esprit ECU Performance Chips

The SE/S4/S4s chips are not compatible with the non-SE cars, both the ECM and number of fuel injectors are different. I think there was an "upgrade" chip for the non-SE, but I could not say if was effective.

Marcus at PUK says there are no performance chips made for the non chargecooled Stevens Esprit. Oh well, I didn't buy the car to track, just love them for what they are. Thanks

Before "chipping" the car, get it to run as well as you can. For the average street driver the Lotus, even stock, is more car than they can handle. For the first performance improvement take a driving course and work on "The nut behind the wheel".

You are definitely correct....I am the limiting factor at this point in maximizing the cars performance. How might I determine if my car is performing as it should be though? I've never driven one before this, and don't know a way to compare it to what normal/perfect should be. Ideas?

Excellent question. The best way would be to get to a shop that has experience with your model and will know if it is working correctly. Alternately you could find another owner nearby that can show you their car or try yours. A final way is to go over the whole car and make sure everything is as per spec. For instance check cylinder pressures, valve clearances, etc. Get a scanner and check the parameters to see what the car is actually doing and compare it against what the manual says. As for handling, the car should be light, no lost motion or play, and very responsive. Check the suspension for any loose, worn, missing, or broken parts. Check tire pressures, wear, and date codes. A good measure of the overall health of the car is watching your MPG and oil consumption.

Check your tire date codes and make sure they're not old. Some esprit don't get much mileage on them and 10 year old tires won't show much wear but will have lost a lot of their softness. Nothing like new tires to really wake up the handling.

After I secured some perfect original OZ wheels I did buy new tires, which as per The Lotus custom, was not a straight forward proposition. Along with some new front Spax shocks, the handling definitely improved. The PO had 17 and 18" wheels on it and I can't believe how much more nimble and light the car feels in its original configuration. My car may not be as fast as the chargecooled variety, but it should handle as well or better, so that's important to me. I may try to get to a Lotus dealer in St Louis this fall and have them go through the car for me. Think that's a good or bad idea?

These days, the techs working at a Lotus dealer would not have a lot of experience with Esprits. ESPECIALLY in Nebraska...where is the closest dealer???

You are best off finding a shop that has serviced/maintained other Esprits IMO.

Of course, this Forum is always helpful...

There are 89 NON-SE chips... but I wouldn't use one. I helped a friend whose '89 had one and it drove poorly.
In this case it was a Powerchips. John Welch was able to provide a stock chip.

Boy now why dont you get a charge coola... The cooler the wata the betta... Cool that hot gas going into the engine bay. But it might be pompous of me. To assume that you have not dont the following.

Throttle jack
Back pressure valve
Exhaust system.
Charge cooler- Or a sprayed inter cooler.
I dunno how much those chippy doos cost but it might behoove you to rip that whole sucker out and just throw in a BADD MOFO ECM.

It's not that I dont want to answer your question I just dont know. But I do know what I have seen. Take a look at My power questions about the pre v8 stevens.

1990 SE.

Mod's: BPV capsule & throttle jack delete with all the vac lines shortened to the source and capped.
Kida special straight through muff.
Knn washable filter.
