Thanks Tom. That's a good point - it's been on my mind as I'm not sure how/if the glass window in the hatch will clear the trumpets. I can certainly put on short trumpets - the ones on there are pretty tall.

I'll come up with some solution if the clearance just isn't there - really don't want to have to modify the hatch if I can avoid it.....

Shortening the stack length will change the max torque point.

S4/S4s hatch without the glass would solve the problem.

You bet Dangerous. It's an audi 016 with a hardened steel strengthening plate at the stern end, and an LSD from a 944. The first two places these 016's implode under big loads is the bearing carrier at the rear pushes through the housing and the spider gears in the diff break up. The strengthening plate helps with the former, the LSD solves the latter.

You can buy these transaxles already worked over like this from German Transaxle of America in Portland (about $6K), or you can DIY it yourself with the proper skills/tools/parts if you enjoy the technical process. I've built up 5 of these transaxles now in this way and all are doing well, some behind 500 hp/tq engines.

Just my personal $.02 here - the citroen transaxle is junk, the UN1 is marginal, and the G50 with LSD and RBT tend to be $10K+ and somewhat heavy and balky to shift, particularly the RBT. That's just me though.

I dream of putting an Audi 4 cyl. engine and trans into my '88. They're fairly reliable when built at 400hp and the trans shifts like a modern manual should. Never been happy with the citroen trans in my '88 and I know trying to squeeze any more hp out of the Lotus 2.2 is just trouble waiting to happen. Tons of fun performance parts available for the Audi world.

Why did you build the Audi 016 instead of the 01E?

Extratx, that would be a fun combination - one word of caution....these engine transplants are a ton of work. Engineering all the systems (cooling, exhaust, ignition, transaxle/CV's, etc.) to marry up the new with the old takes a ton of time to get it all to work together properly.

The 01E is a good choice too. I'm using an 016 simply because I'm very familiar with it and have a few available with the right ratios, and parts already in stock....LSD, new bearings and seals, etc. The 01E is probably a better transaxle to start with frankly.

I have been dreaming lately of an M3 V8 and a boxster/cayman 6 speed swap. Modern trans and high revving V8 that is supposed to be reliable and you can track them hard reliably by some accounts....anybody make a bolt in kit :-)

I like the Audi turbo 4 cyl and 01e trans idea, I wonder how they are with oil control/slosh on track with R compound tires?

Another interesting swap, a 718 cayman/ boxster turbo four with the trans. I suppose the flat 4 might be too wide for the Lotus Engine bay

Here are some pics - looks very wide. The stand alone engine management would probably cost 10K and has not been invented yet....

Very interesting idea. Looking at the pics I would guess the porsche engine is too wide to fit acceptably in the Esprit engine bay. Need some room on the sides of it for access. Would be an interesting project however.

Quick update here....

Moving the inboard brakes to the outboard position as there was no way to retain inboard with the audi transaxle. Custom made caliper mounts and spacer for proper disc/caliper position.

Installed the Wizard Cooling radiator with spal fans. Impressed with the quality of the wizard product - very nice.

Ceramic coated the exhaust pipes downstream of the collectors.

Hoping to have this project finished by this coming summer. The engine and ECU/EFI work isn't far off completion. Still have to fit the rear deck and modified trunk panels....and there will definitely be some custom finishing work needed there.....

Sure. They're called the Ultralight 2 SVA. There's also a four piston version with the integrated mechanical handbrake.

Very nicely made/finished calipers.

Please replace your nylock nuts holding the calipers on with appropriate metallic self locking nuts.

The heat from the brakes will soften the nylon and it will not function as intended.

Thank you, it's a good thought, but not necessary here. The nylocks are serving merely as a jam nut on a threaded bore of the caliper ear. In other words, no locking mechanism is necessary here.

Related, these are zytel 103 nylock nuts which are rated for continuous use to 350 degrees. The fluid will begin to boil 100 degrees below this.
