Front Air Dam?

How practical is it to leave the front air dam (black piece of rubber) on the bottom of the front end on a final edition esprit model? Do most people take them off? Does anyone know what it is actually called and where is best place to get one if want to add one. I am currently looking at an esprit that does not have one and owner doesn't really know.

I have previously purchased one from SJ Sportcars in the UK for 129 pounds (about $194 plus shipping). This includes the black rubber strip and the fiberglass mounting parts below the spoiler. If all you need is the black rubber strip, I would think SJ would sell it separate.

The rubber piece is called the "lip spoiler" . It is fastened to the lower valance with 2 other plastic pieces called the spoiler extension panels (left and right hand pieces).
You can get the pieces from SJ in the UK but I would check with JAE in California first.

The lip spoiler, AKA ground scraper, is always getting caught on driveways and parking bumpers. Common for them to be broken, missing or just scraped up. You have to be very careful going in and out of driveways. I find by hitting the dips at an angle you scrape less. They are made out of PVC and are 2 pieces, a left and a right. They pop up on E-Bay once-in-a-while. Many owners give up and remove them. They are necessary for the proper aerodynamics but not required for street driving. When they are not on it looks like something is missing, especially if you know they are supposed to be there. When the cars were delivered to the dealers new they were not installed. The dealers had to put them on. Probably because Lotus knew it was too likely they would get damaged by the transporters! Also since they are so prone to damage, they are usually not properly reinstalled, fasteners missing or the wrong ones. Damaged spoilers can be repaired. You can sand and polish out scratches and glue tears back together.

How timely of you...there's actually a brand new one for sale right now on eBay:

I personally like mine on for 2 reasons:

1. Reduce air flow under the vehicle

2. I can hear the rubber scrap first before the rest of the front valence, so I know when I'm close to making damaging contact

Thank you for the information. I am looking at buying an 02 tomorrow without one and I just think it looks a lot better with one plus like you said, I think it would help with knowing my clearance when it begins to scrape.

I'm guessing there's not one currently available for the 88-93 style? Although I'm sure one from something else could be made to fit. Personally I do like the look of these on several cars, I added an aftermarket one to my STi because it simply didn't look right without it.

Esprit enthusiasts have gotten pretty creative / resourceful through the years. I've seen nicely done custom-made rubber front lips for the '89 - '93 SEs using garage door bottom seals:

That's an interesting idea!

I don't have one on my 1991 - don't think they were used on the early cars - just the V-8's.

I managed to (partially) rip one off of a 2000 V-8 that I has test driving. The dealer was NOT pleased.

I think frankly that they are more trouble than they are worth to install.

Oddly, I also found that just getting new front tires (Toyo Proxies) helped bring my front end up quite a lot.

The later models (02 up I believe) that the OP was asking about is a one piece rubber piece, not the two piece abs one on the earlier cars.

My front spoiler didn't last one day. So I took the fiberglass pieces off and installed the rubber piece only. I did drive the car for a while with out the front spoiler. I did notice the car felt more stable above 80mph with the spoiler on. Here's a pic of how it is now with just the rubber piece.

Thanks for the confirmation on what I kind of figured out from looking at several pics of Esprits. I just bought the lip spoiler on ebay and was planning on doing the same thing by installing it with out the fiberglass extensions. Should give a little more clearance anyway and provide some type of protection to the body.

Is there any trick to mounting the lip spoiler to the 2002 car without the fiberglass extensions? Do I have to get the mounting hardware from Lotus?

No trick. The fiberglass piece is sandwiched together between the rubber and the bumper.
