Having trouble adjusting gear box to shift

I put shifter in neutral and trans in neutral I adjust cable ends still will not go in first

Does your Esprit have a Citroen 'box, or Renault?

Is this a problem on a new/rebuilt trans or a problem that has just cropped up?

And if it is a Renault, does it have the translator on the right hand side, the left hand side or is it a cable only shift?

Besides the possibility of a problem with the transmission, if the clutch does not fully release you will have trouble getting it into 1st. Before even attempting to adjust anything you must first make sure there are no worn, broken, or missing parts in the shifter linkage and the motor mounts. If you have an older Lotus with a translator it is all the more important to remove any looseness or play in the translator mechanism due to worn parts.
