Ben lurking here for quite some time, but will be buying an Esprit within the next couple of weeks.
My selfish response to this thread is that I hope the prices remain where they are for another month
. I'm searching nationwide and there is quite a range of price and model year, with some excellent deals - and some not so excellent - to be had.
There are three within driving distance (from Tacoma) that interest me, and another S4 not far, but I like the Turbo Esprit body style. Cash is king as they say, for these three cars nearby, they all appear to be in excellent or very good condition and if inspection holds up, I'm happy to pay their asking; not because I'm not thrifty, but because these cars are an excellent bargain comparatively.
You can't get a decent Ferrari for this kind of money and they don't work for me anyhow, too much stigma I guess. I'm not a Corvette guy, I grew up in the late 70's, early 80's watching Grand Prix and Lemans races, lived in Europe, so for me Lotus is what driving is all about. Now if someone gave me a GT40 or a Lola MK VI for $25k, I would be done!
I would buy that $11k black car tomorrow if it was in Seattle because I'm a mechanic and just rebuilt a Citroen DS engine and trans and hydraulic system, so this engine would be a simple (but expensive) job, especially with that gearbox having just been done by the Nederlander. Lucky for me, it's not close by, I could easily sink twice more money into that car than it's worth, but hey, it's a hobby!
Besides, for another $4 to $6K, I can get an '88 or so in pristine condition. So that's what I'm gonna do. An interesting blue 88 just popped up on craigslist yesterday, maybe a hundred miles away, but I really like the black '85 in Seattle and I have my emotions attached to that one. Having owned a DS, Citroen gearboxes don't scare me.
I think the old muscle car craze is OK to watch, but I think they've forgotten how those cars handled back in the 60's and 70's. Hopefully, they done suspension upgrades along with the cool paint. Or maybe they don't drive them so much.
