One of the Esprit's that was sent to Pinewood studios for the Bond people to evaluate the copper fire colour was MPW71V , that car was not actually used in the filming of FYEO, it was originally the 3rd Essex Esprit development car and was also the first Esprit to be fitted with the experimental Lotus 908 V8 at the factory.


The other non-white Esprit sent to Pinewood for evaluation was OPW 679W a Red Turbo Esprit that Lotus were using as a road test car (it later became the Industrial Control Services Pete Hall/Gerry Marshall Race Car)


The photos of the Esprit Vulcan Grey photographed at the factory in 2011 certainly looks like NCL 458V, I remember its top windshield moulding being bent and detached a bit when it was photographed for the 2009 auction sale.(The square decals in the lower corners of the windshield and rear side windows look the same also)


One thing I found to be interesting was the vin of the white Turbo Esprit OPW 654W shows it was made with a Lotus 912 non-turbo engine, when the articles I had read on the copper one OPW 678W said that that was fitted with a non turbo engine (the vin on that one shows it had been made with a 910 turbo engine) I do know NCL 458V had a non-turbo engine fitted at the time of the auction in 2009, which may be where the confusion came from.

As the two main "hero" Bond FYEO Bond Esprits were built and finished on the production line at Hethel (exactly as MJK had always stated)and have sequential vins. it would indicate the cars went down the line together and the decision to paint one Copper Fire was in fact made before filming started, not as a result of a discovery during filming that a white Esprit needed painting a different colour to show up on the snow in Cortina.

So what year are they? IMCDb claims 1980 and 1981. Surely that must be an error if these two rolled down the line sequentially?

I would also like the following specifications if anyone has them:

Engine type
Power (bhp)
Torque: ft/lbs
Weight
Length
Width
Top speed
Transmission
0-60 time
Production (how many were built)

NCL 485V is 1980 registered

OPW 654W and OPW 678W are 1981 registered

So the IMCDB are correct on that.

Power (bhp) - Very Massive compared to an Isetta Scooter
Torque: ft/lbs - Enough to ruin the transmission
Weight - Same as 1,000 Helium filled balloons
Length - 10 cubits
Width - Wide, but not as wide as its long
Top speed - Warp factor 9.9
Transmission - Cheap French supplied Unit
0-60 time - Depends If the engine is running or not.
Production (how many were built) - Many, but not so many to become commonplace, so quite few really.

This all appears correct except for the specified length. A cubit is technically the length from the tip of the thumb to the first knuckle. the correct answer is that the car appears to be 10 cubits long when viewed from a significant distance away.

I have the original new-car sticker for my Esprit, and the specs seem to be completely different from what WayneB posted.


OTOH, I've owned my Esprit for more than 20 years and a more accurate list of attributes could not ever be expressed.

Unfortunately, that is going to be tough to call it 'definitive'.

If you mean Bond cars as "..in addition to Esprit..." that's even harder.

BMW magazine covered the Bond cars (circa 2009?) and they had all sorts of mis-information on basic information on the Esprits. So when that info gets propagated, it's very difficult to reconcile.

I was a young lad when the James Bond films came out - I subscribed to Road&Track when the movie came out. The details in that article do not match some of the other Lotus Esprit books that I own. Even some of the updated Esprit books by the same author seem to have conflicting data.

But for "The Spy Who Loved Me" (TSWLM), that one got mangled with the recent news about Elon Musk buying the original 77 compressed air submarine Esprit. I have the original R&T article hiding upstairs - that was dated 1977 and even that has some errors/conflicts compared to later news. The various Esprit books (Walton, etc) also have some differences.

Try this site - plenty of information albeit in different tabs - check 'Information' and models at that point.

So does this mean that OPW 654W and 678W weren't Essex models, but regular turbos? Only NCL 458V was an actual Essex car? I'm a bit confused. What does "Essex Engine" mean? Wayne, do you think the snow story is untrue?

Be careful on Ebay, one vendor advertised stickers or decals but instead sent an image file for you to make your own.
