LOTUS at MONTEREY?

Hey, it is a Monterey Car Festival Week!

Anyone close to the event, and/or attending?
Is there a LOTUS presence in the event? Anyone has a car in it?

Please post your impressions and pictures.

I'm planning on going to Mecum Auction and Russo and Steele on Saturday.
I didn't see any Lotus cars on either of those places.

Will post some of the more notable cars but last time I was there, there were only 1 or 2 Lotus cars there (at Mecum or Russo and Steele)

The Concourse d'Elegance is a series of events at Pebble Beach, Carmel, Monterey and other locals, encompassing shows, auctions an hands on events. Not just a car show but the largest and most prestigious car show in the world.
Lotus usually has a presence at the Lotus Corral held at the Mazda Raceway/Laguna Seca.

The whole week is loaded with events, the oldest of which is the Pebble Beach Concours this Sunday. A close second is the Rolex Historic Races at Laguna Seca which is all weekend, although Saturday seems to be the most well attended day. Besides appx. 5 major auto auctions, there are also a number of other events, some free and some with limited and expensive ticket availability. Concours Italiano and The Quail are two of the bigger events although the Concours d'LeMons is a more recent up and comer and from what I hear a real hoot. I've been going to Monterey for this weekend for over 20 years but at this point stick strictly to the events at Laguna Seca. It's about the only place in the world where you can see incredibly valuable, museum quality cars actually used as they were supposed to be used, driven on a race track. In the past I've seen a few Loti gathered on Saturday at the parking area on the lakebed but haven't seen more than one or two in the last few years. I don't think there's a formal group at Laguna Seca this year as Lotus isn't on the list of marques with reserved spots. I'll be there on Saturday and will try to park near any other Lotus I see. Hopefully there will be a few.

Many thanks to driftwood/Mat - he got me and my wife complimentary tickets ($30 each) to the Mecum auction in Monterey 2017.
Got a chance to meet and chat with him as well. Great guy!

Here is my Lotus album from the visit in Monterey.

Quick notes:

1. Race car Evora did not meet reserve (maxed at $60K; estimated to hit $150K+)
2. Esprit 25th anniversary did not meet reserve (maxed at $46K; unknown reserve)
3. 2015 Exige Cup did not meet reserve (maxed at $60K; estimated to hit $90K+)
4. 1959 Elite race car did not meet reserve (maxed at $35K; unknown reserve)
5. Check other photos for sales performance.

Similar results from other marques or just Lotus sales slow this year?

We were walking the sold/fail to sell section. Since topic of thread is 'Lotus at Monterey' I initially only posted just that. There were plenty of cars that didn't reach reserve.

I was surprised to see many 911 cars that failed to reach reserve. In past the 911s were very hot but maybe supply catching up. About half the 911 variants were red 1980s/1990s that didn't make reserve. Reminder I'm walking the sold/not sold lot so skewed as the expensive cars got to separate area

Ironically a 1974 Ford Pinto station wagon with 39K miles unrestored but excellent condition sold for like $20-$40K (estimated on sheet; I wasn't there when hammer fell).

VW Buses with rare multi windows were hot in $150K range. But same in poor condition only fetched $7K and did not meet reserve.

Two 2015 Ferrari La Ferraris were there. Red one sold unknown price. White one hit $4M (FYI MSRP is $1.4M) but did not hit reserve. So at the high end it was a mix of hit and miss too.

August 25, 2018 (Saturday)

Due to our usually busy work week - my wife and I make it down Sat for the Mecum (afternoon), then R&M, and Russo and Steele auctions (late afternoon/evening).

If it's not too hot, going down in the 87 Turbo Esprit (R12 AC is good for 90F; anything hotter and it's Chevy time).
================================================== ========================

We like to watch - we don't register as bidders (cuz we already got the cool toys, yes?), but like checking out the cool cars.

R&M has a Lotus Esprit S1 with original gel coat orange paint and 4K original miles.

It's a well known car that Tony K (I don't know him but he's acknowledged to be Esprit S1 guru) says is one of the better preserved originals.

Going to take my DSLR and take as many pics as possible for a rare unicorn such as that S1.

I'll be there with some friends. We've rented a house in Carmel Valley for the week.

I'll have my camera and the Evora. Back in January I was planning to take the Seven but it's not quite ready to make the trip just yet:

Assuming I get the hall pass I'll be at Lemons on Saturday AM and Laguna Seca in the afternoon. Plan on bringing the Esprit, Father Lucas willing. Just a day trip for me.

As a quirk in scheduling the GGLC scheduled an autocross on Sunday the 26th at the Marina Airport (reservation made last October) and then realized in Jan-Feb that Monterey Weeks was pushed 1 week later.

So, if you need a diversion on Sunday, come by the Marina Airport. We'll be there!!!

My car is a bit, very little bit, ahead of Escondido Ron as I should be able to start the new engine tomorrow.

We will be at the track for the Pre-Reunion, arriving on the 16th, and camping through the Reunion. I have 3 tickets left for the Pre-Reunion on Sunday if anyone wants/needs them.

We will be at SCRAMP Camp, on B Road for the duration. The Pre-Reunion is not crowded and if we want to do a BBQ after the Saturday races we could likely accommodate that at the campsite. The Reunion is a zoo, but if someone needs to unwind before the drive home we will be there. If I can figure out a way to get our camping trailer and the Seven there I will be a happy camper. Anyone want to share a transport from SoCal to Monterey?

So wish I could join y'all. Wife & I "discovered" MCW a few years ago, when we stayed on the peninsula for summer vacation. We left *just* as things were getting going.

Now, we plan around it, for our next West Coast trip.

Hope y'all have a blast!
