New here, '88 esprit turbo, upgraded to SE

Hi all,
Finally joined the forum. I'm usually just observing but decided I need to communicate. Always loved cars but when I bought the Esprit in 2001 I got an education! Rebuilt engine and updated to SE spec+, Rebuilt trany, suspension, steering, electrics, cooling. Pulled the whole car apart and painted everything separately. The project is never done, not complaining, enjoy it.
One reason i'm here is to ask if anyone has recommendations about wheels. I'm sure you know, tires for the rims on these cars are virtually not available. Like to get something original to Esprits but prices have become HUGE! So been looking at aftermarket. They are available in Europe but haven't found any that will ship to US. Probably a common question but I'm new here and haven't found anything on the forum. Like to get 17's.

First of all, WELCOME!

You CAN find speed-rated (V or higher) tires for the 15" wheels. I got some just a month ago in the OEM sizes.

They were expensive but a LOT less than new wheels (which will cost you $3000+ plus the cost of the tires you choose). F&R will be different brands. But hey, they are still black and round!

You can get 17" copies of the 'Ruote OZ' OEM wheels from Rotiform Wheels in the proper offsets and hub size. Member @lolo did the groundwork, and he is a Rotiform dealer.

The other alternative is to have custom wheels made up, in a different style. @SleekGT's friend *cough* who has a G-car has really gorgeous Fiske wheels fitted to his.

Sometimes you will run across later year Esprit wheels, but for the '88 you need 50mm rear spacers and front hub modifications to make them fit.

This was sleekgt's fitment on the '88 he owned.

Welcome to the Lotus Brotherhood!

88 cars have 5x108 (5x4.25") bolt pattern, the same as Volvo, Jaguar and Ferrari 360.
Look on eBay for "Volvo 5x108 wheels 18", or Ferrari 5x108 wheels 18. Check BBS, Fikse, Hamann, also google Boze Wheels in CA.

Here is a nice set: eBay item number 162328026695

RT096 – 18x8, 5x108, ET34, CB67 - & RT099 – 18x10.5, 5x108, ET77, CB67

These wheels were originally made for a Ferrari 512TR, but came off of a 1989 Ferrari Testarossa. They will most cars with a 5x108 bolt pattern.

I have an '89 with 15" fronts and 16" rears. I just bought Kuhmo's V rated from Discount Tire. Keep looking, there are tires out there but granted they're not plentiful.

Thanks for the tips and response. Really like the Ruote Oz copies that rotoform has. Have to check that out. Wheels make a huge difference in the presentation of a car. If they are much different than original I think it can subtract not add to the looks, let alone the handling change. The handling is the reason I bought the car, looks come along for the ride and don't hurt!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for carbuff/Atwell to mention my late 88's use of 17" OZ Futuras.
Note that I left off the wheel nut covers - to give it a poor man's S300 look. I have the covers stored away.

My choice of the 17" (17x7 and 17x8.5) was to minimize the weight gain, preserve the OEM offset, and the fact that aftermarket choices were limited.

If you're interested, I am selling the 17" OZ Futuras and will throw in the rear 50mm adapter that effectively keeps the OEM ET-20 intact. The front hubs need to be machined (or swapped -that was my approach) from 60mm to 58mm to use these wheels (from a 95 S4s USA model).

Any change in offset will affect handling. Yeah - so will the 17" size and weight increase, but not as much as going to different offsets and 18/19 inch wheels.

Will PM you details on the wheels/tires.

When I was considering the Rotiform option, I talked to Jason at Rotiform, personally.
http://www.rotiform.com/

Their custom wheels are forged for lightness, and if you get the 'pocketing' option, they are within a pound or two of the smaller OEM cast wheels....and they don't require spacers.

Plus, you can get either painted wheels (as original) or powder coated finishes.

You can also get two wheels with spokes in the opposite direction if you want...that way the spiral can be directional on the left VS the right side. The pic of lolo's car shows the alternate spoke direction.

If you can't find a Rotiform dealer close to you in Oregon, PM me and I'll give you lolo's contact information.

It was ~$3200 in summer 2014. That included shipping from CA to PA.

Maybe, you could pick them up!
