Squeak when shifting.

I have a squeak in the gearshift of my 1991 SE. Seems to happen most when shifting into 1st gear (against the spring). It sound as if it's possibly COMING FROM that spring.

I could get the red nozzle of a can of WD 40 between the shift gaiter and the column - think that would be worth a try?

You could try the wd-40 as there isn't much in the tunnel it can hurt but be aware there is a rubber gaiter as well under the leather one.

It might be worth pulling the console and taking a close look at the shifter to see what is causing the squeak. There are some plastic bushings in there that tend to get brittle and break apart with age and eventually the shift mechanism can come apart usually at the most inconvenient time...

Let us know what you find.

"British engineering" makes so much noises that after two weeks I don't hear anything anymore.
