Maybe the evora depreciation will finally come to a halt.

While I wish that was true, I fear much the opposite, like Saab, Fiat, Alfa, Peugeot, etc., and I know you'll say those weren't great cars to start with, but Lotus couldn't sell many cars already, and with no models at all, we'll see more dealers close, parts start to dry up (how many spares will you have and for how long when you only made a few thousand cars), etc. Oh, woe is me!

. Although this saddens me as a consumer, I'm happy as a Lotus fan. As many MANY (counteless really) people have said, people would rather buy a Porsche than an Evora. I happen to like the Evora, but the decision comes from the fact Porsche offers more value. Playing catch-up with small upgrades every other model year isn't going to change perceptions. Lotus is just too far behind.

They have to revolutionize the Evora by starting from scratch. That type of design takes a lot of money. Lotus doesn't have a lot of money. So the only way they could do such a development effort is to stop sales for one year and save the resources to focus on R&D. This is probably why you hear reports of mass lay-offs and hiring sprees. They're probably letting assembly workers go and hiring engineers. Come one year, if the R&D is done, they'll hire back the assembly line and cut back on R&D.

I don't understand why they're not selling more of these. I drove my friend's '10 NA and it was pretty damn fun and it looks awesome. I can only imagine how much more fun the S would be. I'm saving up to hopefully buy one in a few years.

Because the American car market is a Looks & Numbers market. The Evora does have the looks, but that NA model has the numbers of a 370Z. American's couldn't care less about "steering feel" or "nimbleness". Our roads are straight and the land is flat. For most people, the excitement of driving is when they accelerate on the on-ramp every day to work. That's why we have muscle cars. America made the "go fast in a straight line" car, because that's exactly how most Americans drive.

There just wasn't any justification to buying the Evora. The Exige and Elise at least had the raw and lightweight aspect going for it...but even then it still didn't deliver the right numbers. The Evora is just a regular 'ol GT car like everyone else. Why buy it when you can get a Corvette or a 911? The Corvette has stellar numbers and the 911 has status. The Evora got none of that. Especially when people found it was just a Camry engine, not even a worked over Camry engine.

(The following was told from the viewpoint of the average American car buyer, not mine)

Look at this way. Dodge is about to sell a car with 700HP for $60K. That's what American's want. They don't care about anything else. They want the status. It doesn't matter what the rest of the car is like. It doesn't matter if all the American muscle cars weigh 3800 pounds. They don't care about that useless information. They want the numbers that matter (or the status) and the Evora does not even come close for what they charge.

This is Merica! Sub-300HP sports car don't cut it here.

America has always been defined by its excess. The Grand Canyon, professional sports contracts, Wendy’s baconator, extra bacon! I myself have 18 Lamborghinis, and a Subaru station-wagon. And it’s because of this excess that I have flourished. I implore you, please do not stop profiting. Live for excess, it’s the American way.

Ya and you probably have good internet speeds too. The bulk of the American interior isn't as lucky.

Do you think this will have a negative effect on our car re-sale values? I am sad to see this. The car Vera is amazing and so much fun to drive. Too bad it did not sell that well.

Maybe it's my rose-tinted glasses, but I am seeing these layoffs and all as great news. Lotus needs more automated production and fewer hands on the line, plain and simple. Rolls Royce charges what it does for handiwork but Lotus cannot play in that league. Automation will reduce costs and increase consistency. Throw in the rumors that this pause in production is because they won't invest in one more year of the present Evora because they plan on replacing it, and it is all great news. Look at the new CEO's history - he should be expected to automate production and redesign for more profitable cars at appropriate price points. That means we will see a disruption in Lotus as we know it, and that's because Lotus as we know it doesn't work.

Lotus will probably have to go through crash, safety and emissions testing with the facelifted model very likely to be announced in March next year, which I'm sure they will.. However, it probably doesn't make sense to upgrade the airbags and recertify the current model in the meantime.

If you have the choice between a Stairway to Heaven and a Highway to Hell don't forget the Nomex®!

I can't agree. Automation costs, spread over so few cars, would be extremely high.

Often, for example, cars are made of fiberglass or other plastics because the tooling for stamping/forming metal body parts isn't cost effective.

Lotus needs sales and money for the R&D required to meet US specs.

05 elise (BOE Rev300 supercharged, SSRs, shift tower mods, Multivex; HID hi/low beams); 05 Corolla XRS. Past '72 Elan Sprint (I restored), Lotus 7 w/X-flow, TT Supra, Bugeye Sprite, BMW 2002 & 2002tii, '65 GTO.
