Potential "Used" Evora?

Hi all, I went and saw a 2013 Lotus Evora today because I am interested in potentially buying one. I showed up at the dealership and found out that they had the car but the engine had blown up. They were working on getting it replaced by Lotus but don't know when the car would be ready. What do you think about buying a "used" Evora with a new engine? Thanks for the input.

Depends on the price and condition of the car. Usually it takes a lot of abuse to blow the engine on these. If it was me then I would try to buy the car with bad engine for a low price. Then buy monkey wrench racing built motor and boe charge cooler. That would be a fast evora

Probable reason of how motor blew was a missied downshift. If wheel well liners are worn in back section of fronts it has been tracked. In and of itself, these cars thrive on track usage but if they are doing a motor, a new clutch is a no brainer If it is a competent mechanic it could be a very good way to get in a Lotus and a reasonable cost with the single biggest repair ticket addressed esp if they have also inspected the tranny, etc

I know the one you are talking about. Silver N/A Evora at Star Motor Car right?

The motor actually did not blow because of a downshift. It blew up because something went wrong internally, not at all because of neglect or the owner. They had it dissected in the garage and Tom was waiting for Lotus to come and check it. I think they might have had it shipped to Lotus for further evaluation too. This was 3 weeks ago. Tom (Lotus tech) told me that most likely they will replace the motor.

Also this happened while they (dealership) were taking the car for a test drive. I trust Tom from Star.

If the price is right, I would totally buy it. Especially since the new motor will be covered under warranty for a year or more.

VERY but not unheard of. Basically from what the tech told me is that it seems a Toyota issue with the engine and it he would think they will just cover the engine. I know Lotus was coming down to look at it because he told them his findings and he didnt think Toyota would want it since it would cost way more than replacing the engine to go through all of that.

Now again, this was like 3-4 weeks ago so I don't know what happened since then but I spent good 2 days at the shop with him while he was working on my car and talked about it quite a bit. He was still tearing it apart and he had already come to the conclusion that it was a component in the engine which failed.

Not speaking to this car in particular, but if you ever see an Evora going for cheap because the engine is blown, buy it. Most people would not bother with such a car, but if you know how to work a wrench it is a cake project. That engine is a $1000 item -- i.e. good used condition -- and is available anyplace, and swapping it in is the work of a weekend. Even buying a new crate engine from Toyota is likely not more than a few thousand, though I admit I've never bothered to check.

Just my two cents.

I'm surprised a dealer would bother fixing a blown-engine Evora, especially a dealer with one Lotus tech, and which sells a slim handful of cars per year anyway. Not knocking them; I wish 'em luck. Thanks for the info, Maru.

Yes, it is the 2013 Silver N/A at Star Motor Cars in Houston, TX. It was very interesting to see the entire back end of the car removed. They even have a lot of the interior removed for the repairs. Should I have any concern about any mileage that the frame/ body would have on it or how well the interior gets put back together?
