Toyo R888r v Nitto NT01

Toyo R888r v Nitto NT01
With the Toyo R888 we Evora owners with 18 inch wheels had an ideal rake angle setup with 235/40R18 fronts and 275/40R18 rears. The R888r's don't have our rear fitment. I was lucky enough to get a few extra sets of R888's for the rear and ran R888r's up front for past 2 seasons. Frankly, almost no one has our ideal fitment. There is no 235/35 R18. Nitto NT01's come in our size's. Does anyone have experience with both?

My only other option is running Hoosier R7's next year in a 245/35 and a 275/35R18. Rake angle will be ideal but all OD's are 1 inch smaller which should make F-R balance with ABS etc.

Rumour has it Nitto NT01's are based on old RA1's which were damn good tires. I know they will be worthless on anything damp and beyond.

This was posted in the suspension and tires zone, but I bought it over here because any of us with 18's have a problem brewing as far as proper sizing is concerned. The only other option left in DOT R's are Hoosiers which are all 1 inch smaller OD but at least maintain the rake angle. Realize this is also only us S1 folks as , from what I understand, the 18's don't fit on the 400's and beyond??

BTW I may cut my TD1.3 's loose by next spring if anyone is interested Cheap!

I've been running the same R888R fronts and R888 rears as you have.. are those rears no longer available?

Feedback from other guys at my local track who have run both say that the NT01's maybe don't have as good first-day grip, but stay more consistent and don't have the falloff that the R888's do. Then again, that's from Miata/S2000 type guys. I don't know anyone who has run both on the Evora.

Derek...Toyo no longer makes the 275/40R18! There is no such thing as a 235/35R18 to mate with the 275/35R18, so we end up with a lousy rake situation unless we shrink down to a 225/40R18 up front. On a 9 inch wheel, that is a BIGGG stretch and less rubber. If you could squeeze a 255/35r18 in the space I suspect oversteer will be the issue cuz we need more rear rubber. Next spring I will try the Nitto's or a set of Hoosiers. Basically our 18 in wheels have few proper options left.

They are now 2years old. That is what I've done for past 2 years since Phil's ran out. Sure they are fine but I was also getting tired of mixing 888's with 888r's. The original 888's do roll the edges of the grooves a lot more which yields a wierd squirmy feeling on hot days so I'm not too sorry to say goodbye to the R888.
I have contacted Toyo. maybe if a bunch of us do this, they will make our size in the 888r.

Have you considered using 19" for just the rear?

Everyone here knows the NT01 and R888 were from the same company and used the same rubber, just a different tread pattern, right? I can't comment on the new R888r, and haven't used the NT01 (but it always got good reviews from what I saw).

San, I always thought the NT01 rubber was from the RA1 era??.. A good thing. Will be trying them. 888's had a enough of a clearing pattern to help you survive a rain shower. 888r's not so much and NT01 pattern looks useless. Guess that's why R888's were a go to for many of us and NT01 is the loudest out there from what I have read. At least 10:1 Toyo /Nitto at a track day.

19 rears are indeed an option but TD1.3 does not make us a wheel, so if going for another set of wheels, I want to make sure they fit newer Evoras.

Do 18/19's fit on a 400??? Didn't think they did.

"Everyone" is a very strong statement. The NT01 is closer to the RA-1 in generation age and rubber compounds. The R888 was a replacement generation of the RA-1 but due to heavy complaints in Spec Miata about quick peaking of the tire performance Toyo brought back the RA-1's

Thanks Julian. I have always heard nothing but praise about the RA1 but we just were never given any sizes for any of our Lotus. NT01's it is next spring.
