Tesla Raises $226m in the IPO today...

On Tuesday June 29, 2010, 11:35 am
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Tesla Motors are climbing in their trading debut after the auto maker's expanded initial public offering raised more money than expected.

The electric car maker, based in Palo Alto, Calif., raised $226.1 million after selling 13.3 million shares for $17 apiece. It had earlier expected to price 11.1 million shares for $14 to $16 per share.

Tesla Motors Inc. is a risky bet on the future electric car industry, which isn't currently a big draw for U.S. consumers.

The company hasn't had a profitable quarter since it was founded in 2003, and has sold only 1,000 of its high-end Roadster sports cars. Investors are hoping that a planned lower-priced car will have a broader appeal.

Shares are rising $1.11, or 6.5 percent, to $18.11.

Tesla has NEVER made a quarterly profit. It has lost nearly $250 million in its history and borrowed $500 million from the DOE.

Real solid investment.

I just picked up a few shares just for fun. I'm hoping the initial hype will drive the price up for a bit.

Bet you are kicking yourself now that it is over $100 a share

I lucked out and bought it on the day after the IPO and the price had dropped and now I am up over 400%

I screwed up and bought Solar City too but made the mistake of selling it after I doubled my money when it went to $24 a share. It doubled again in the month since I sold it.

Unfortunately the only money I invested was in my Roth Ira which had next to nothing in it since I had lost almost all of it in Lucent stock a few years early.

Tesla as a compnay was valued at more than Fiat about a month ago, and after todays rally it is worth more than Porsche!

Are you sure it's worth more than Porsche? Porsche is owned by VW and has a complicated equity structure.

I'm glad I invested early on TSLA, now just hope it either splits, goes up more, or pays a dividend. Too bad I didn't drop more money into it, I could have bought one of their cars with how the stock just quadrupled!

According to Google Finance Tesla has 10.70 Billion in Market Cap, while Porsche is at 12.69. Last week Tesla was trading at around over 100 per share, so at that time it had a higher valuation. Surprised it didnt go up after they announced on Friday they were going to add more charging stations to allow cross country trips and the ability to use their stations to recharge in 30 minutes, and that they might be willing to sell the technology to other car companies since it wont work with their chargers.

I don't have an opinion on their stock price.

But I did see a Model S up close and I was impressed with its size and its looks. The owner said that he was quite pleased with his purchase.

The original Telsa based on the Lotus was too small to be a mainstream car.

I bought this stock on the day it went public at $18 something. Even though I bought it right away I think I got my shares for around $20 bucks because it went up faster than my broker bought it. Now look at it. I sold it last year so I could buy my Lotus. Afterwards Tesla got the awards like car of the year and all the good reviews and it took off. I wish I would have held on to it because I don't make much money and it would be worth much more now.
