Noob to Lotus, looking to buy one in near future

I'm new to the Lotus forum so please excuse my ignorance. I'm looking to buy a Lotus elise/exige in the near future and I'm looking for some advice from the veterans. The one that I'm currently interested in is:

2005 Lotus Elise - Excellent Condition - No Accidents

It is worth it? I live about 6 hours away from LA, so checking it out in person would be hard but I plan on having it inspected by a Lotus dealer.

Thanks in advance!

It's a good deal considering the add ons. If you track the car you'll need good shocks, a new muffler in time, harness bar, harness, brake pads, alignment, etc. If all you want to do is drive on street, then it's fine. Milage is a bit high, but without track use or lots of hard driving, it's got tons of miles left to go without major problems. It's a solid powertrain for street use.

Now, if you're looking to track a lot, you'd be better off buying a lower mileage car or a prepped car with a fresh powertrain since the truly dedicated track car will require money to build and strong power which older engines tend not to have.

Check the ECU readouts from the dealer and make sure it hasn't been tweaked in a crash.

Welcome to the world of Lotus. It's a blast.

Sometimes you have to go in circles to move forward.

I won't be tracking a lot, maybe a handful of events during the year.

Either the dealer ripped him off bad, or he mistyped that number.

Trivial, but the badging on the rear of the car is not original. Also, the wheel bolts are not original. Most people move to a stud system, but he looks like he used a replacement bolt instead. Likely the stock bolts did not work with the RAC Monolites.

I'm confused...is this an elise or exige? The description doesn't seem to match up since the wheels are sport pack and the tires are 175?

that is an exige. A typo probably, looks like the stock write up for the elise. Easy ways to tell them apart, the elise has the notch back, and visible rear window, the exige has that bubble rear trunk area with no rear visible window. Also stock elises except for the new supercharged ones do not have any type of rear wing, and do not have a front splitter. Other than that, the 2005 - 2006 exiges and elises are almost identical, same engine, same tires (if the elise has the track pack), same suspension (with the elise track pack). Thats why there are so many elises, they were cheaper than the exige, and almost exactly the same. The exige is a bit better for track use with the better aero bits but thats all. Once you get into 2007 things change, the exige comes with a super charger and makes it a whole lot better than the NA elise.

Couldn't an Elise be converted into an Exige easily though?

Not the more recent ones - different engine extra. Wouldn't make any sense to buy the cheaper model and try and "retro-fit" it to the more expensive model...

I documented my findings on that car on this forum already. One of the few cars I saw initially. I am not surprised it's still at Seaside.

I'm guessing the car is not what it's advertised as? Can you link me to your thread/post? Thanks
