I agree, supporting lotus F1 team because you own a lotus is like clutching at straws. I ... - spiller

Being a Lotus fan for 40 years and an owner for 30 years I'll settle for grasping at straws.
+1! I have no issues with grasping at straws. BTW, the Lotus "arrangement" is through 2017 and can be renewed.

I just have to wonder who you all supported 3 years ago when the current Lotus team was called Renualt? Team Lotus, aka Caterham?

Team Lotus died when Chapman died.
But I don't have a problem supporting current "Lotus F1 Team", that used to be "Renault", that used to be "Benetton", that used to be Toleman.
Quite simply, as a personal taste, I have more fun rooting for something far from the typical Ferrari, McLaren, or Redbull and enjoy seeing little guys punch above their weight(or money in this case).
Maybe that's why I drive a Lotus.

Do companies die when their founders leave/die? I would think that hand-picking your engineering team ensures like philosophies... I would also think that his ideals, ideas, and general modus operandi lives on...for a while at least. Look at our Elises/Exiges...they do truly conform to the Lotus design philosophy...long after Chapman's death.

That was all about Flavio Briatore getting real creative with the interpretation of the rules...and he's an Italian.

Why has Lotus declined to participate in the December tires testing?

they likely don't have the funds to go, or a car to take?

"I really started paying attention to cars was when they came out with the Nissan Z, the first body. Then I seen the Cherokees, the old square ones, and I was like, “Wow, that’s cool.” Then I seen the Isuzu jeeps and I seen the Wranglers."

So the Elises and Exiges we all drive are not Lotuses either...because they were designed after Colin died????

Hilarious. I'm not talking about that.
I'm confused as to why you brought that up.

I was addressing how the current "Lotus F1 Team" has nothing to do with "Team Lotus" of 1954~1994 and expressing how I feel about rooting for underdogs.

Obviously, the fact is, we all know that Chapman kept the F1 business and the car business separate. "Team Lotus" vaporized during the 90s. Sure, the car business lived on and came up with the Elise/Exige. I'm okay with that.

Did the team F1 team from Enstone have any input in the design of Elise/Exige? Obviously not, and I'm also fine with that. It's a fine team that knows what they're doing, although a bit(aka massively) underfunded at this juncture. I totally don't mind them parading around with Lotus stickers, either.

I'm just letting you know I'm not disagreeing with you.

I realize that too...but if you look in the F-1 record books, this current team record/status is in with the original team...so, legally, it is the same team. I don't like that...

Then root for the Caterham team...at least they had ties with the Colin Chapman...

It is a lot more incestuous than you allow yourself to think.

I don't know what my prejudice against French is, but I do realize that they make great F-1 engines (Renault) and I always use their tires (Michelin)...

In essence I don't disagree with you either...but here is another masquerader that has legal right to the Lotus name...

I guess Lotus is just whoring out its name these days...

was, or better put "Danny was out whoring the Lotus name"

god... so glad that fraudulent a$$hat is gone! yet... the F1 fiasco lingers on - hence this discussion.

which is why it wouldn't surprise me at all if the enstone team changes names yet again - assuming any sponsorship comes through.. did they get that big deal that was pending?

Nothing wrong with whoring, aka "licensing" out the name. And fyi Mercedes, Mclaren and Ferrari F1 teams are differ.t businesses with different employees than the car companies. Out of those three only Ferrari shares same ownership, and even that may not be 100% true as the team may have some other minor investors not common to Fiat/Ferrari.

I fear the future of Lotus F1 in 2014 season. They are given up team points for driver pay money and gave up new car development to push the current car. So entering 2014 season with one good driver, no car, no money look out Caterham you may have competition.
