Electric racing

So, Formula E has inaugural race in Beijing this weekend. 10 Formula 1 alumni

Formula E - Official FIA Formula E Championship

I'm pretty excited about it. A whole new venue of racing. It will be interesting to see what directions of engineering will prove uniquely appropriate for this format.

Lack of the racing sound is the first thing that comes to mind for most everyone I guess. But then F1 lost a lot of its pizazz this year with the smaller turbo motors.

I'm looking forward to it too, although it would be nice if it wasn't a spec series so we could see some real innovation - I know it keeps costs down and will help it's success but it would be nice.

I like that it'll run in big cities that don't/can't do F1 or Indycars so that will be a nice USP too and help it gain popularity.

I really want to watch this weekend; the website says Fox has the rights but I can't find it.

I'll post them up tonight when I get home. I'm sure my iPad has access to my home DVR but forgive me too lazy right now to relearn how to access it.

Saturday 3:25-6:00 AM, that's AM, this Saturday on Dish channel 150 FOX Sports1

And

Sunday 11:55 PM -1:05 AM Dish channel 397 FOX sports2

That's about as buried as they could place it. I figure the first one is live though.

Hey guys, feel free to chastise and ridicule the whole concept.

Here's a bunch of info on it, for those who don't know anything about it and some info for those that do. It looks like it will be opened up for innovation if it takes off

So whatcha think?

The slowest warm up lap I've ever seen.....

Racing wasn't bad, i think it would be nice to have them going a little faster and hopefully next year it'll happen when they can modify the cars.

I like quick nick, so the last 5-6 laps were great

As for the end - wow - I'll refrain from saying in case anyone wants to see it

My only question is the fan boost not a penalty too as the car will use more power??

Looks like it's just you and me CB.

Yes the parade lap was pretty silly, like a hypermiling Pruis. Which was pretty much what they were at that stage I guess.

The course left a lot to be desired in terms of interest, but OK I guess for the first race. Monaco will be interesting!

During the safety car they sounded, unfortunately I guess, like bumper cars at the fair.

But when underway it was pretty cool. Could hear aspects that were covered up before. Once the very enthusiastic announcer would ever quit long enough to hear the racecars. Wonder if that was their ploy?

Quick Nick did an awesome job, had the race won but geezzz!

Overall not bad for a first race. And yes next year and beyond no telling what we'll see.

Surely they can come up with a way to switch batteries or something. Changing to another car is, well, embarrassing.

FanBoost. Fully escapes me. What are they thinking?

I still hope Nicolas Prost gets a post race penalty for his bonehead move. He turned in way to early and to me it looked he did it deliberately. Reminds me: like father like son ... Can't wait to see the Fe race in Long Beach next April. Happy that our fellow Exige driver Nick Heidfeld is OK. Here is the crash:

I tried to watch the race this morning but found it lame without engine sound and fell asleep. Woke up in time to see the wreck at the end.

That wasn't an early turn in, it was a "Let's wreck Nick" move. There is no room for idiots like this, ban him.

That was about as amateurish a move as one could imagine. Nick had set him up perfectly to take the win.

Embarrassing to all drivers everywhere. His poor Granddad. But oh yeah, seen that before.

For me the sound didn't matter. I guess it's like the 'new' F1, they don't sound all that bad now that were almost a season in. Do I prefer v10s revving to 18000 - yes - but the 'lectric cars were pretty load whine. It's just different to what were used to.

I'd like to see them find a way to change batteries in the future, but to be fair the car switch worked better than I thought. Interesting when buemi went back out. They should put a rule in that they can fix the car and he could've pitted again and finished in his original car. It could be a way to spruce up he racing or have longer races - ie two cars that can be pitted as much as they want.

It was a great first race and hopefully it'll evolve, the future of racing isn't as bleak as we might think. As I said hopefully they can make them faster in time and as the teams get more used to the tech and push the cars further.

The racing got better after the pit stops as they had more power for a shorter run, it's a bit annoying that they have to do some economy runs too but it adds to the strategy. The speed at the end was definitely more exciting and as nick showed there potential for some very exciting finishes. F1 could only wish to have a race that can be won on the last corner....

Great drive by quick nick and the race was stolen from him and holy crap what a crash. Glad he was ok and Prost should get a penalty for that dumb move - didn't see Nick my a**

The i8 was a perfect pace car but the i3 at the end looked a little out of place. Tesla missed out on hat one

FanBoost == Nascar levels of clownshoes. All the
Other than that, the cars looked slow and that "track" sucked.

I think this could be a lot of fun on a better track - that one was awful.

I've read that Formula E requires lots of braking zones (vs huge straights with one short high-speed braking zone) to let the cars regenerate power efficiently, but I still don't understand why the track was basically a square of streets with chicanes everywhere. They could have done a lot more to keep things interesting.

The racing part of the racing was awesome. Tons of passes, lots of opportunity, nobody really ran away from the pack, and the terrible hack move at the finish was awful but Formula E couldn't have asked for more perfect PR.

I hope Prost gets a penalty (has he? I don't keep up). "I didn't see him" is a terrible excuse - the car was right next to him before he turned in... it's not like he got snuck up on or got an apex stolen / divebombed through the inside...

A Model S will go into reduced performance mode after ~3 minutes at racing pace.

Drives a Prius (clearly knows nothing about cars).
