Kimi Raikkonen Goes to NASCAR

Ex-Formula 1 Champ Raikkonen in Talks to Join Nascar Team (1) - Bloomberg.com

And from Finish newspaper

QUOTE (Tarun Sannomat)
Raikkonen goes NASCAR

Turun Sanomat 29.3 2011 15:07:20

The world champion of Formula One and current rally star Kimi Raikkonen expands his field of experiences: The 31-year-old Finn is going to race in the most popular North American race series NASCAR

The spectacular NASCAR debut for Raikkonen will be already before the becoming summer. Kimi is going to carry on with WRC Rally, too. He has agreed to do eight more rallies this year.

With the world famous newcomer driver there will be also a brand new team to race in NASCAR level: ICE1 Racing. Raikkonen joins forces with Foster Gillett. He will be the major partner of the Finnish team.

Foster's family was the former majority owners of the Montreal Canadiens NHL franchise and the former co-owners of Liverpool football club.

Last year Foster Gillett was operating with Richard Petty Motorsport in NASCAR. Now he is about to break new ground with Raikkonen and ICE1 Racing.

American spirit
inspires Raikkonen

Ė Iím really looking forward to get there to familiarize to the world of NASCAR. I have been following it for a long time. I know, itís a very tough and open top racing series. I just love the American spirit of racing. It feels just great to get involved with that. Obviously, it will be very challenging and great fun for me, Raikkonen assures to Turun Sanomat.

As every rookie Raikkonen will start his NASCAR career with a race in World Camping Truck series. After that Kimi is going to Nationwide and will be adding the Sprint Cup series as well upon successful completion of the NASCAR approval process.
Actually most rookies start in the ARCA series which is one step below Trucks, but still cars. Essentially cast away Sprint Cup cars from several years ago. That's how you get your superspeedway license, for example (you need a separate endorsement to race on the restrictor plate tracks, and the way to do it is to race in ARCA on the "normal" tracks, then in ARCA on a super speedway), then in a truck or N'wide on a superspeedway, then in Cup on the superspeedway. The last two can be done on the same weekend)

The negotations for the car for ICE1 Racing team are just about to be finished. Raikkonen will race both in ovals and normal track circuits.

He should do the Indy 500 as well. I like Kimi as a driver. I can't imagine how well he'll do in the non-stop interview media blitz that is NASCAR with his calm demeanor, though.

He would be great on the short track.

I would also like to see him in a drift competition. Now that would be entertaining.

Tonight's the night Kimi conquers Charlotte!

Actually, I saw him driving in practice and Kimi was sliding the truck to a near wreck. Great driving, not a great set up.

I would love to see him win a nascar race just for the non-interview! It would drive them crazy to see a stoned face Kimi in victory lane

Kimi 15th, only hit the wall twice, missed other wrecks right in front of him, he looked good. I doubt this is going to be something he would pursue, though compared to rallying. Less chance of being killed, however.

Think the only reason he's attempting NASCAR is to get his tiny little grubbies on some Dixie Chicks.

I watched this race, and it was first time I had given ANY time or attention to NASCAR - and I think I may have become hooked.

First, Kimi was receiving a TON of attention from the commentators and press (the sort of attention that being a former McLaren and Ferrari driver and F1 world champion actually warrants). Absolutely ZERO 'good-ol'-boy attitude, everybody was very positive about having him there.

Second, his setup was very loose, but so was EVERYBODY's. There was much frustration up and down pit lane. It apparently was a perfect storm of unusual conditions that lead to the difficulty.

Third, it was a new record for cautions in a NASCAR truck race, with the top five race leaders/points leaders/most experienced drivers having the most difficulty and hitting the wall and/or spinning.

Fourth, there seems to be a great deal of respect for Nelson Piquet Jr, in spite of the fact that he's both a twit and French. He was headed for a top 5 finish, but finally overcooked it on the penultimate lap or thereabouts. Spin, nice recovery, missed the wall. He was very competitive.

Fifth, Kimi being Finnish and having grown up on ice, seemed to adapt pretty well to the loose setup in this race. He qualified 31st, managed to pull it up to 15th (mainly through pit strategy I think), but never made any real mistakes.

Sixth, I found NASCAR to be EXTREMELY good racing, never a dull moment (could have done with less cautions though), good depiction of the actual speed (180mph) on TV, easy to see the struggle of balancing the car in an ideal attitude with the intense desire to pass the guy only a few feet away.

It may be low tech compared to F1, but it was awfully good. I have to believe it is an extremely intense experience from the driver's perspective.

Okay, I'm of to watch the Spanish GP on my DVR.

Word on the street is that Kimi had heard about women that actually shave all their tender parts... and simply wanted to see for himself if this was true. Not like he was going to see anything different in Europa!

NASCAR has become extremely boring with all their retarded caution flags every 25 seconds.
