Size and horn really don't matter if the idiot isn't paying attention when he's backing up. I had somebody back up into my Xterra, when I was several car lengths behind him and laying on my horn, and I could see him in his side mirror the whole time.

My condolences to the OP, but glad he's found another car.

How much evidence would one need to know the stock horn sucks?

A guy here was at a car show. Hot rod backed into him; low speed stuff.

Hot rod driver did NOT hear the horn.

I bet there are 10 more examples...

I really urge you to get a Stebel or ~.

It'a 30 minute job.

Which one did you get and was it plug and play?

I think this is incorrect. Horns are for when people are not paying attention.

I've been in a few situations and, believe me, people always stop and look when the horn is loud enough.

What horn were you using?

Nautilus. I simply used existing horn wiring w/o stock horn. If I haven't covered this above, let me know.

Safest way is relay, tripped by stock horn wiring, and a thicker fused wire to Stebel.

I was thinking about the reluctance to perform such a simple, yet vital, task.

On the highway last week, I realized it's not just a matter of preventing a fender-bender.

Your lives may well depend on that SUV, truck, etc knowing you're there and he's about to hit you....

Note that I dislike passivity. Sorry.

Hey Gray Elise..... How much damage was there to the frame, and suspension? Is this one that can actually be re-built? Is this now labeled as a salvage title? If you want to sell it, shoot me a message. [email protected] Thanks Doug

Hi guys!
Haven't been here for a while. Just saw this. Unbelievable, cause the exact same thing (with the exact same reason) happened to me a couple years back.
Damage was $17000 + rental.

But I'm still happy with the car.

Doug sorry for the late response but as far as I know there was no damage to the frame and suspension. It was only fiberglass damage and the front grill was broken. I currently do not have the vehicle it is up for auction (see previous post in thread). It was 'totaled' by my insurance, not sure what the title will reflect. If you babe any questions let me know.

**** I had a nautilus air horn in my Miata and a dip**** at a stop sign decided to toss his 3/4 ton in reverse. (Fwiw I could see his eyes in his drivers side rear view mirror). Nothing matters when you are dealing with Morons.

I slammed it into reverse only to look behind me and see someone right up my ass. So I layed nto the air horn. Old man backed nearly 2 ft over my Miata.

Posting this due to some above. "You need a loud horn" and "you gotta give room" etc. sorry. It's a sore subject.

I'm shocked that totaled the car. As it shouldn't have IMO. Sounds like your insurance is undervaluation the car to me.

I've got 2 Hella horns mounted in the mouth on the bolts for the tow eyelet. These are very big in the Subaru community and for those of you who think the stock horn is loud in a garage.....these will make your eyes bleed and give you a concussion by comparison.

You can barely see the red behind the grill here:

Hi, I got backed into by a truck in my Fiero which had similar visibility issue. I also had a guy in truck try to move to my lane when I was right alongside. You can't make people see you - you have to accept that they won't - especially when you move fast and probably weren't there the last time he checked his mirror... You really have to drive like I do on my motorcycle - just assume everyone around you is blind and allow for it - you won't be far wrong !

It's unfortunate, but most insurance companies will total out Eliges which merely carry any fiberglass damage due to the fact that the Lotus is not in their damage adjustment software. Additionally, some of these cars don't even post values on NADA, KBB and other car value sources.

Totally repairable....I would get more quotes. You do not have to take it where they want. I imagine at most with a BOE carbon clam and paint maybe $12-15...But on the low side of that. Sorry to see that. Someone backed into me and made far less of a dent and the route I mentioned is what I am going to do and it will not be totaled.

I keep sack of change in the cubby. When all else fails, I would throw the sack at the car so they will def notice. You'll just have to quickly remember to do so.
