HOT DOG! I can finally upgrade to a PAID membership!

I knew this day would finally come. And I bet soon to follow will be the eventual demise of all of the free memberships here. Yeah!

So, after I upgrade I assume, as is stated in the info, that the advertisements will decrease... oh, wait... ABP already does that.. sorry... and I assume that the annoying "Upgrade My Membership" link under my PM notification will also go away... right? I also get a limit of 1000 PMs so I can never get REDRAGON to stop PMing me when my box fills... and maybe even a sticker package... WOO HOO!

Oh, joy. I really like how far away this site has gotten from the original community of EliseTalk. It's awesome.

Hah, I've never even seen that banner. Hopefully, never will.
Btw, ABP = Ad Block Plus for Firefox

Atomic Web Browser for iPhone works also.

The sponsors should really love this... so, they are paying thousand$ / year to have banners on the site, and the side admin are also charging LT users NOT to see the same ads?

If true, this seems fundamentally unfair to all involved.

Obviously the next step will be "premium" banner ads that aren't blocked for "premium" subscribers...

It says "Less Advertising" so whatever that means, but I also use ABP so no issue there for me.

so i get to pay money to have a bigger avatar, more PMs, larger profile pic, stickers, and less ads. yay.

the one that confuses me is "upload signatures". are signatures going away if we don't pay?

How about this novel idea, if you're a paying member you can offer small services like painting engine covers, organizing group buys, and similar actions. That could be worth the $15. otherwise, this site won't see a cent from me.

Yup- this is an ownership call, that didn't get rolled by the mods/admins, for any details. They can fill us in. Don't think it's any changes for non-paying members. They need to confirm but would assume, less ads is the Goggle stuff and the sponsor ads stays as is. More PM's, bigger Avatar/Profile size and signatures.

Allan- would you like to be a mod or admin...

As a small business owner, I'll tell you that the sponsor fees here on LT make it tough to stay in business. Apart from COGS, it is the single highest expense for my company.

There are those who will say "you have to spend money to make money", and that is true... but if I am paying for a banner ad to generate sales, and LT is receiving money from subscribers NOT to see the banner ad that I have payed for, instead of being an INVESTMENT, spending my sponsorship dollars here is really a bit like p*ssing into a stiff wind. (Which in any case is probably more pleasurable than paying for something that I'm not receiving.)

OTHER SPONSORS: do you agree? Surely I am not the only sponsor that smells something afoul with this policy.

And, FWIW, many of the other forums (P*rsche, for instance) charge a FRACTION of the sponsorship fees that LOT charges.)

6speedonline charges about $200 per year for sponsorship. LotusTalk charges around $2,000.

LotusTalk will go the way of MySpace, just watch.

Open letter to Lotus Talk admin:

Via e-mail, 12:04PM central time, 12/8/2010

"Hello Marie -

I'm happy to hear the news that members of Lotus Talk can opt out of seeing my
ads by using a paid subscription to Lotus Talk.

I'm eager to see the reduction in our sponsorship fees. I trust that this reduction
in fees will bring Lotus Talk sponsorship in line with other forums (such as
the P*rsche forum, which charges $250 / year for sponsoring vendors.)

The reduction in sponsorship fees will make it possible for us to stay in business
and continue providing innovative products to the Lotus community.

Please let me know what our reduced rates will be!

Thank you,

Thomas Alberti

I thought I was already supporting this site ever time I made a purchase from a sponsor, no way I'm going to pay on both ends. Sorry but this site will become a ghost town FAST!

I have noticed, in the last few weeks at least, that LotusTalk often loads up the top header, and stalls on one (or both) of the two horizontal ads at the top. It often stops on one of these, and never loads the remainder of the page. I can sometimes goose it into loading by refreshing. I use IE8, and I don't use any adblocker. It's frustrating, and more so if it looks like the owners want money to make it acceptably fast.
