Password Reset

I've been a member for a few years now. Had my Lotus since '12 member since '09. My password was randomly reset yesterday by the admins. Not sure why, was I hacked? Is that normal, no explanation why...

Oh I was blowed up! For those that don't know what that means......
Leave a mans password alone, period.
That is something you just don't do.
This ain't national security or a Swiss bank account. It doesn't need 10 digits and all that symbol crap.

What really got me was that I logged in and then changed it to my new password that I came up with and it kicked me out for two days! After contacting administration, they sent me a new updated password obviously created by someone at MIT or NASA and I finally got back to the forum I so love.

It's things like this that keep me from contributing financially to a forum

@Turbopun - From VerticalScope's notice:

Is VerticalScope going to replace MD5 hashing with something more robust?

Not sure, I hope so... I am not a cryptologist, but I know there's better options. And with an ecosystem as complex as a forum, with many 3rd party plugins, I don't envy the IT guys jobs now.

Btw we mods did not get any different, or advance notice of this. We basically found out at the same time, and know the same as y'all.

Hi.

So VS gets hacked and someone gets all the username and password info and as a result WE need to make our passwords stronger.

VS fix your system security. Do not give the false impression that a complex password for this site by us little people would have prevented your security issue. Just have us all change our passwords and keep it simple.

Hey all,

I understand the complex passwords can be a PITA, but using these and making them unique across each of your accounts will help protect you. Many online users have the same email and password combination across many of their accounts, including banking sites, which puts them at risk. We take your security very seriously.

As for the breach, it was not on VS itself, but through a third party plugin developers' database. These plugins run autonomously of vB and therefore require access to user data. These plugins can include things like chat, newsletters, or mobile apps, to name a few.

On updated hashing, we had already been looking in to our options prior to being notified of this breach. We have implemented other security features in response to this breach as well.

Thanks everyone

Dayle
