For a lot of people, modding the car is fun in ADDITION to purist here advocating for driving time. Lol

To me, it’s obvious. But what do I know....

1) Toe link upgrade to keep the fun from ending unexpectedly (even on a street car)...
2) Wheel studs to avoid aggravation...
3) supercharger and muffler to make you grin each time to depress the go pedal...
4) interior/exterior “enhancements” that make you grin everytime you look at the car...

Shocks are after those. Penske singles are the easy button there for many...

In addition to Phil's very wise comments, I'd like to add a few things.

These aren't fun upgrades but they are safety/peace of mind upgrades:
- new aluminum radiator. the oem unit has plastic end tanks and have a habit of bursting/leaking. if possible, swap to two puller fans mounted on TOP of the rad versus the oem pusher fans that are mounted below.
- fix the oem oil cooling. if it hasn't had the oil line recall, do it. if you have dual oil coolers, consider swapping it for a single rear oil cooler as the stock dual rads over-cool the oil.
- get some HID headlights if it doesn't have them already.
- upgrade the shifter to InoKinetic's Shifter111. the stock one is super flimsy.

THEN get the Penske's and the supporting driver mods. Haha

Thinking of K-swapping? Here's an idea of the cost involved.

First and foremost are semi-slick tires! Nothing else matters if you don't have semi-slicks. Then get the Penskes...the tires will amplify the good that the Penskes do.

The toe links are not a problem...only the inner bolt is. Don't waste your money on "toe link kits". They add unsprung weight to your car and lighten your wallet.

There is data on here someplace that shows that the rear mounted oil cooler that closely follow the oil temperatures of a Lotus with no oil coolers at all... you figure that one out.

The rest is up to you... have fun!

Whoever said that island life is great was never committed to Alcatraz...

When first got my Elise years ago, I got the Multivex right away after reading posts on here. Then, I sold my Elise and got an Evora. I also got the Multivex for the Evora. Early last year, I got an Exige with no rear mirror and I drove quite a bit without Multivex or rear mirror. Now, I so comfortable with driving the Exige, I would never buy Multivex mirrors. And if I can start all over with my Elise back in 2010, I would never buy the Multivex.

For slow city driving I do have one hand on the wheel(usually not on the top but around 8 o clock). For backroads it's all hands on deck.

The TRD intake... just about any conical air filter is a much better design and sound just as good, if not better than the TRD intake.

Whoever said that island life is great was never committed to Alcatraz...

Confused. For me, "comfortable" is not part of the equation.

Do I have blind spots?

Must I turn my head (away) from road to see if there are cars there?

Have I missed some cars back there?



I know a bit about adjusting mirrors and can assure you that, w/o Multivex or equivalent, the answers are all, unfortunately, yes.

Comfy doesn't equal SAFE. Sorry.

Sorry for the confusion. Comfortable also means "free from stress or fear" and that’s what I meant in driving my Exige. I do understand where you and many other Elise owners are saying. I did have this blind spot fear when I first have my Elise. So I got the multivex mirrors for both my Elise and then my Evora years ago. I still have them on my Evora S now. After driving my Exige without the rear mirror, my body/mind adjust to the car’s limited visibility. I become more aware of my surrounding. It’s very similar to driving my Evora for the first time. There is no dead pedal. Several new Evora owners also complain about this on this forum. But after couple weeks of driving my Evora, I got used to it.

I’ve been driving the Exige for over a year now and I feel that adding the multivex doesn’t make me drive or feel any safer. This is just my opinion and my experience after owning/driving all 3 Lotus cars with and without multivex mirrors. That said, I have nothing against multivex mirrors. They do provide more visibility and owners that have this concern should get them. As for me, I no longer care for them after my Exige driving experience.

But, sorry, this makes no sense to me. Trying to keep track of cars back there is a losing, annoying strategy.

I've been an Elise owner since '05 and done more than a few modifications to the 05 and 06 cars. There are many tweaks to make the cars more user friendly that are not expensive. LED bulbs, trunk lights, foot well lights, and better headlights are all on that list. Convex outside mirrors are another good one. The passenger side mirror on US cars is already convex and a replacement for that side fits the driver side perfectly giving a wider field of view. An auto-dimming rear view mirror with Homelink is really good since headlights behind you will be right at the level of the rear window. Good tires, brake pads, and adjustable shocks are also good, particularly if you are going to take the car to the track (which I highly recommend).

Driver training at the track will open a new world of enjoyment of the car. Don't think you can come near the limits of the car on the street without doing something really stupid and very dangerous. The Elise does exactly what you ask it to do, but you do need to be careful what you ask for. Driver training will help you understand what to ask and when.

The number one mod though that will transform the car into a whole other dimension is the addition of a supercharger kit (BOE is the best). This is an expensive mod since to do it right requires changing the clutch, fuel pump, upgrading third and fourth gears, adding a limited slip diff, and adding bits to prevent fuel and oil starvation, but the difference in performance is fantastic.

Nice tip on using the passenger side mirror for the driver's side. Sounds a lot cheaper than other options.

I don't think the addition of a supercharger requires all the bits you've listed, but it depends on the supercharger, power levels and mostly how hard the driver is on parts.

This was the route I went - it works quite well. You even have the choice of lettering in multiple languages or no lettering depending on which market the mirror was made for. I went with the US English variant because it was slightly cheaper and matched the passenger side.

What I got was the mirror plus the black snap-in surround. They sent it to me pre-configured for left side installation, but if they hadn't it would not be that hard to snap the mirror glass out of the surround, rotate 180 degrees, and snap it back in so that the text is on the bottom on the left hand side.

The wide angle mirrors are great. I got the ones from RLS, back when they were functioning well.

I may have an issue with astigmatism or something though. I can focus on the normal part of the mirror just fine, but the convex parts look blurry to me unless I really put effort to focus or use just one eye. For quick checks, I've gotten used to using one eye.

There are a ton of great mods, as mentioned above...I found the best value mod to be the stiffer rear motor mount for me. Gave me a noticeable improvement in the shifting department. Yes, the NVH increased, but has subsided a bit since the mount has worn in a little.

Most of the supercharger kits recommend upgrading the clutch since the stock clutch is near max with just the stock engine. The higher capacity fuel pump and injectors are part of the BOE kits since you have to burn more fuel to make more power and one of the biggest dangers to a supercharged engine is running lean under boost. Since the fuel tank has to come out to change the pump it makes sense to change to a baffled fuel tank if you plan to go to the track. Another option is a fuel pot. I have the baffled tank and have had no problems with fuel starvation since it went in. The transmission is OK for most street driven cars, but as with the toe links for the rear if you plan to go to the track it's a good mod since 3rd and 4th get most of the hard use on most tracks. The LSD isn't necessary, but it does help prevent wheel spin coming out of corners on throttle at the track (probably increases the load on the 3rd gears too.) The baffled oil pan is a good mod if you do track time regardless of whether a supercharger is added or not.
