The original title was "Cars I love but can't afford, so I'll write this hate piece instead... That way I might just convince myself I don't REALLY want them" .... The editor obviously changed it LOL

Why you should never own a Lotus Elise…

Because it will make every other car you drive feel like an over weight pig! I seriously feel my Elise has ruined every other car for me.

Actually, how I read the few sentences: they're actually quite a backhanded compliment to the Elise. :-)

Yes. Other sporty cars feel like regular cars after the Elise.

"This list could be entirely comprised of British cars . . . ."

You have to admit, that's funny.

They say that it's "utterly awful to drive any way but fast".

Where's the problem with that? That sounds like a massive positive to me.

It sounds like he first picked cars, then researched what made them cars that he would not want to own. During his research of the Elise, I expect that he had the old Rover powered cars in mind and after finding that it has the reliable 2ZZ had nothing to say. It has no power steering......like an older 911 or Honda CRX or Civic. Yah, that's such a good reason to not own one.

the no power steering comment was very unintelligent.

I've never had a difficult time even at stopped/crawling speeds

@ZeRoSL
I've found a picture of the author... This might explain his problems with the car:

I wonder if we're not missing the point? The title is "cars you should never own", not the 10 worst cars manufactured, or the 10 least reliable cars, or the 10 ugliest cars... maybe the more correct understanding is along the lines: if you drink two-buck Chuck (and your budget only affords such), then don't drink a $400 bottle of truly fine wine [cause you'll come to hate your two-buck Chuck, and never be satisfied again]; or if your budget only allows McD's, don't try Maxims, 'cause every meal afterwards you'll hate... or don't drive an Elise, because whatever you drive currently, that you just might like, you'll come away hating or wondering why you wasted so many years of your life driving it etc etc etc. No?

He could have been more critical and it only would have drawn me in further to wanting one. These cars are the male equivalent to Steve Martin's bit the Cruel Shoes...

Anna knew She had to have a new pair of shoes today, and Carlo had helped her try on every pair in the store.

Carlo spoke wearily, "Well, that's it. That’s every pair of shoes in the place."

"Oh, you must have one more pair. . . .”

"No, not one more . . . . Well, we have the cruel shoes, but no one would want to try . . .

“Yes, let me see the cruel shoes!"

"No, you don't understand, you see, the cruel shoes are . . .'

"Get them!"

Carlo disappeared into the back room for a moment, and then reappeared carrying an ordinary shoebox. He took off the lid and re*moved a hideous pair of black and white pumps. But this was not an ordinary pair of black and white pumps; both were left feet, one had a right angle turn with separate compartments that pointed the toes in impossible directions. The other shoe was six inches long and was curved inward like a rocking chair with a vise and razor blades to hold the foot in place. Carlo spoke hesitantly, ". . . Now you see . . . they' re not fit for humans . . ."

"Put them on me."

"But... "Put them on me!"

Carlo knew all arguments were useless. He knelt down before her and forced the feet into the shoes.

The screams were incredible.

Anna crawled over to the mirror and held her bloody feet up where she could see.
"I like them."
She paid Carlo and crawled out of the store into the street.

Later that day, Carlo was overheard saying to a new customer, "Well, that's it. That’s every pair of shoes in the place. Unless, of course, you'd like to try the cruel shoes."

I could see the article complaining about the stiff suspension, the random quirks of the car, the fact that many seemingly-moderate accidents might result in having to replace a clam (and still none of those dissuaded me from buying one), but complaining about the lack of power steering is just an odd area to focus on.

if you're having trouble steering the elise even at slow speeds with no power steering, you should check your tire pressure

If the author complains about the lack of power steering, then obviously has never driven an elise. I am still amazed at how little effort it takes to turn the wheel even at low speed or a dead stop.

My 68 Mustang has no power steering. It actually takes effort to turn that wheel when stopped with the iron block V8 over the front.

I used to own a 72 Datsun 240z. No power steering. It was marginally worse than the Elise because it was front engine and weighed 400 lbs more.

Power steering, in most modern cars(namely commuters and what is the common DD for the common person), isn't even necessary. We are past the era of 5,000lb lumbering station wagons being the every mans car.

@MrBlah : My experience is that a little power steering in a front-engine, front wheel-drive car can be a nice thing a low speeds. However, power steering can often mean death to steering feel in sports cars. But you know that.

No doubt. I'm actually quite dangerous if I've been to toodling around in the Elise exclusively for a couple of weeks, then have to go back to the minivan for some reason.
