Elise To Become Caterham in 2012

Saw an interesting article about the future of our Elise. Here is the link if anybody is interested.

News : Elise to become a Caterham in 2012? | AROnline

Here are excerpts from the article:

[Lotus Elise - are we about to see a RenaultSport powered Caterham Elise?

Our sources tell us that a team of engineers, many ex-Lotus, are beavering away in the Hethel Engineering Centre. Word has it they are working on an Elise chassis powered by a Renault Sport engine/transmission, and that the car will launch under the Caterham banner next year. Whether the car will carry the Elise name is unknown.

Rumour suggests the Renault Sport-powered Caterham could launch under a new name and with unique bodywork. This sharing of assets would allow Group Lotus to move forward with its larger, upscale Elise project, while effectively turning over the old car to Tony Fernandes and the boys at Caterham. Expect to see the Team Lotus name ‘sold’ to Group lotus as payment for this deal.

Those close to the situation strongly suggest this isn’t the end of the battle between Tony Fernandes and Dany Bahar, and that it is a prelude to even greater cooperation between the two companies. Some even suggest the move makes it more likely that Fernandes will eventually take control of Lotus, and run Caterham and Group Lotus as complimentary companies on the road and in Formula 1 once Bahar leaves.

Fernandes would scoop up a revamped Lotus for pennies on the dollar. Proton and the Malaysian would be able to preserve their honour by turning control of the U.K. sports car maker over to a man who is a considered a national treasure in his home country.

We will keep an eye on this story as it progresses.]

Truth or rumors, what say you guys and gals?

Caterham has nothing to offer. Their retail side of vehicle's are mediocre, imo. The Renault engines have been rumored to replace Toyota's expiring 2zz engines but it never got that far (at least for US sales) since Lotus can't sell them here anyways due to Lotus not meeting US safety regulations...

Hopefully by 2013, Lotus is still around and they sell their cars to US consumers.

They'll be arond. They are actually still selling more cars now than they did for the decade prior to 2005 when our S2 launched in the US as far as i know.

Not really new news. Basically there are a bunch of rumors out there. Tony Fernandes is giving up the lotus name in f1 next year as he done a deal with the mayasian government with his and the national airline. This one seems pretty likely.

Next up is caterham are/ were supposed to get the s1 Elise chassis, this has been a rumor for a long time. It doesn't make sense for group to sell the s2 chassis as they are still using it ie the new exige variants and remember the Elise is still available in Europe and they just launched a new sc version so it makes no sense to give up intellectual property they still need. So caterham could end up with the s1 chassis but it is closely related to the s2 so.....

Next up engineers are defecting from group to caterham and caterham have set up a new tech/engineering center near hethel (group Lotus) and near hingham (where team lotus/caterham) currently is. Anyway with these guys on board caterham can do their own Elise type chassis and owe nothing to group although having one to tweak would be easier.

What Danys plans for group are is still unknown. There was an article lasts week that said that Dany might end up with it himself, it could go public or genii capitals Gerard Lopez (ie Renault f1 team that group sponsors) could end up with group..... There are too many twists and turns with them right now.

Ideally I'd like Tony f to end up with both, caterham the vw to a lotus audi makes perfect sense and be ideal for both companies, however it all depends on Danys/protons plans for group which the general concensous is they want an ipo and sell it off, whether at that point it's actually worth anything or be overvalued is anyone's guess

I am interested to see Caterham comes up with more Elise like cars. I know they got Tony Shute on board. He's one of the principals behind the S1 Elise. With all the ex-Lotus engineering staff they hired I agree with Cornbeef that they might not even need an Elise chassis to start with.
